So it's official...
Marathon #3 will be 3/21...all registered and ready to PR...I hope! It's the Georgia ING, it's a no brainer race since it's local and I don't have to worry about travel and lodging etc. I still plan to run Marine Corp. 10/2010 (my goal from last year but decided to get married instead) so thought this would be good practice since it's been over a year.
Can you tell I'm a little nervous with all my babble. I have had a base of 13 miles since my last marathon a year ago so i'm not technically starting to train till mid January. My goal is to break 4hrs...which is doable since my pace has dropped to a 8:15/mile on long runs...but in all honesty I hope to do even a little better despite the very hilly course...high hopes!!
So back to training I go!!

Seems like we are the same pace too! I'm running it with a friend (also similar pace - she lives in Clarkston) and we have been debating the 3:50 and 4:00 pace...I heard that it was hilly? So, I might lean towards 4 until the half and pick it up a little if I feel good.
can I warn you about running at pace or faster for long runs...I was doing 8:15 long runs (I got competitive with myself, thinking if I could do 14, 16, 18 at this pace...why not 26) and it really backfired on me (you know those last 6.2 miles...) I lost out on the aerobic workout. I'm trying to embrace the 30-60 second/mile slower run.
I'm staying in Suwannee (sp?) my DH's company is HQed there. I hope it won't be that bad to get to marathon morning.
I hear Marine Corp is a great race too - it's definitely on my list. I'm doing Steamtown in October - only because of the 800-900 foot drop in elevation - I'm hoping for a BQ.

I believe Suwannee is about 45 minutes from Atlanta. The race starts and ends downtown. If you need any advice about Atlanta or the areas around it let me know...I have only been here 2yrs but my husband has been for 19 so he knows a lot!

You are 100% right. I was always told to never run my long runs at my race pace. I have such a hard time with this. I'm glad you reminded me and I will try to increase the pace a bit. I think the problem is that I haven't trained for anything in a year so I just go out and run on Saturday mornings, and if I feel good I run faster and if I am tired a little slower. I need to manage these runs a little better now that I have marathons in the horizon and will be increasing the distance. I get so insecure that if i want to run the 4hr or 3:50 I need to run that all the time....even though I know that's not the case and the interval runs will get me there. Thanks again for the advice...let me know when you start training.

I TOTALLY have trouble slowing down. I really just started over the past 4-5 weeks, since training.
I started training...I'm up to 12 miles for my long run. I'm thinking maybe I'll spring for a downtown hotel. DH's company will pay for the Suwannee one, but after the race, I doubt I'll want to drive back there.

I had asked on my running board about ING GA a while ago...this is what they told me:
I have not run it, but just about everyone I run with has. Their advice was to do training runs on hilly courses, and manage your effort on certain parts of the course. I'm not sure what they mean by hilly, as our base weekly long-run loop (13 1/4 miles) has 3200 feet of accent and descent.
ING Georgia is a beautiful race course but it is hilly, especially if you're not from here. It's in the middle of the spring blooming season and some of the neighborhoods are just beautiful. I've run the half every year; a friend ran the full the first year when it was even more hilly. The Expo is on par with the big marathons like Chicago and Marine Corps. The weather, though, is unpredictable. First year it was 63 at the start and finished in the high 70s, second year it was 44, light rain and wind just one week after tornadoes ripped thru downtown Atlanta forcing the course to be re-routed at the last minute; third year 45 and very windy. So pack everything to be prepared.
I ran the full the Inagural year and while the course is beautiful and tough, the race got a bad rap becasue there was no Powerade or water for even the early marathoners due to a glitch and the temps were in the low 80s!
However, I have since run the half twice and will run it again this year as it is better organized and the weather for the last two years has been cold (wet the year after the tornadoes). My advice is to train on lots and lots of hills as it is one of the hillier courses out there and the hills are relentlous - no real big ones, just lots of them. Running through the Atlanta neighborhoods is fun especially for someone like me who lives here, but doesn't get to see the city too much except by car. The weather should be mild in March as 80s is a major exception rather than the rule.
I've been doing tons of hills lately (one mile downhill - 2 miles steady uphill loop) - I run after work and work in a hilly north shore town...so hopefully it will prepare me.
