so if I just gave DS ice cream w/ peanut butter in it
and it was the first time hes had nuts and he had no reaction, does that mean hes in the clear or does an allergy take a few times to show up? Hes 22 months.

IDK, but DD ate a peanut a few months ago and was fine. She hasn't had another one, but I think if they are allergic, you would know right away.

I would say so - I think the reaction is pretty severe otherwise.
DD has had nuts since she was about 10 months, so what do I know?

i was under the impression it's the second time one is exposed to something he/she is allergic to, the reaction will take place. but i could totally be wrong...

From what I understand, it takes being exposed to something a couple of times for an allergy to show itself. That's why they say to only introduce a new food to a baby every 3-5 days. Peanuts tend to be more severe so I'm not sure if they're an exception but I know DS was exposed to strawberries as an infant with no reaction but when he started eating them regularly several months ago, his allergy came out and actually got worse and worse each time he had them (before we figured out what was causing the reaction).

Not necessarily. While they can have a reaction the 1st time - w/ food allergies it may not show until the 2nd or third time - which is why they say when you introduce a new food to give it three days in a row and not to introduce any other new foods so you know what the reaction was from

its like Ive never introduced new foods before, LOL. I forgot when intro'ing baby foods and stuff it was one kind for 3 days.
Do you think a PB swirl in ice cream is enough to trigger one, god forbid he is allergic. Maybe Ill give him some more tonight and tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed. But have some Benadryl on hand just in case.

I wouldn't take chances with allergies. My DS had allergy testing at 18 months that showed no allergy to nuts or peanuts, but I still held off on giving any kind of nuts until he was older. He had PB for the first time when he was around 2.5 years old. He ate it a few times and was fine so I thought we were in the clear, but then when he had it another time he had a reaction. He was tested again when he was 3 years old and it confirmed that he's now allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. Nut reactions are often anaphylactic in which case you'd need an epi pen, and not just benadryl. JMO, but I admit I may be overly cautious as a parent of a child with food allergies.

Not snarky - am I just never supposed to introduce nuts then? Pedi said no nuts until around 2, he is almost 23 months? Im so confused!

yeah, i know.  the info that is out there is so conflicting as well. some studies say that avoiding allergens is the way to go and others say that you shouldn't avoid. my advice is to just be prepared with benadryl and i would give it earlier in the day so that you can watch for reactions. i wouldn't want to put my kid down to sleep after giving something that has a potential to be highly allergic, kwim? we have food allergies in the famiy so i have to be more cautious.

I gave Chelsea PB at 17 months and she was fine. She has had it multiple times since then and no reaction. I told my ped and she didn't have a problem with it either.
If you are worried, when you give Eddie PB have benedryl next to you just in carse
