So confused re: IUI

This is the first month that we are supposed to do an IUI and I am so confused. I went in on Friday, day 13 of my cycle and the doctor told me to schedule the IUI for Sunday. I asked if I was still supposed to come in if I got a "-" on the OPK and he said "just do what I say". I don't want to mention who it is but I really can't stand him. He is an RE at NSLIJ. I want to switch doctors but I figured I would try to give it a little time since I have heard a lot of positive things about him. Anyway, I don't understand what the point of doing an IUI tomorrow is when I am not even ovulating yet. My gut is telling me that this has something to do with the fact that my actual ovulation day will fall on Yom Kippur and that none of the doctors there will be available on Monday to perform the procedure. If this is the case though I will be SO MAD that I wasn't warned about this possibiltiy before taking the fertility meds. Has anyone had any experience with this and can anyone explain why he might have done it this way? TIA

ETA: I normally do not ovulate until day 17-23, and tomorrow will only be day 15.

Re: So confused re: IUI

Are you doing a medicated or unmedicated IUI? Sounds very strange but I don't think they would let you do it even if its early in your cycle. I guess I would test on sunday am and if you don't have a surge let him know and see if you could do it again on tues??? I used to go to that clinic and switched over, although none of the doctors were ever mean I think there are definetly much better ones out there. Good luck.

I took clomid earlier in my cycle but I am not doing anything else. I was told to schedule an US on day 14, which is today, but since they are not in on Sat they had me come in yesterday. He said that I should come in on Sunday. I asked him what if I don't get the surge tomorrow, do I still come in or should I hold off until I get the surge and he said "Just do what I am telling you". He was not nice, this is the second time he was very harsh with me, and I know that I am not being oversensitive because my husband thinks that this guy is a jerk too. I just think that this is a waste of time being that i have not gotten the surge. I tried calling. The doctor on call is supposed to call me back but hasn't. I just can't for the life of me figure out why i am going in tomorrow.

Re: So confused re: IUI

Could it be that your embies are ready to go? Did he tell you what sizes they were or how many are ready? When the Dr on call returns the call, I would ask him/her that. Sperm can last up to 72 hours but you would be right at the cusp of the time frame and may even miss O which would be a complete waste of time.

One of the Drs in that practice is a little harsh. I had to give him an attitude when he refused to listen to my objection to doing back to back IUIs. If he had looked at my chart prior to seeing me he would know why I was against it in the first place.

Re: So confused re: IUI

I can't remember the name of it, but they gave me some medication that stopped ovulation before they wanted me to. Then I took the trigger shot and went in the next 2 days.

Maybe when you go in on Sunday you can ask for it? Chat Icon Chat Icon

If you don't like your doctor, I would definitely switch after this cycle if you don't get your BFP.

I would definitely go in tomorrow so they can do a sono and measure your follies.

Re: So confused re: IUI

I always get IUIs in advance of when I would naturally ovulate... but I trigger myself each time with Ovidrel.

Sperm can last a while under the right condition after an IUI... but to me, it seems that you should be doing an IUI after trigger or after your body's own trigger (+OPK)... unless there is something we don't know about... like the size of your eggs. I ovulated early after my 1 un-triggered cycle of clomid.

It also seems like you don't communicate well with your doctor & it's time to switch.

I'm only hearing part of the story...but it doesn't sound like you are hearing each other.

Well, I didn't go in. The doctor on call finally called me back and gave me 5 different responses about how i could come in or I could wait. it was so confusing. I am definitely going to switch doctors. I need clear directions and I need to also understand why i am doing what i am doing. I can't just be told to "just do what I say". It's not in my nature to just blindly listen to what a doctor is telling me without understanding. I NEVER ovulate before day 17 so I was wondering why he would have me go in. Now I know he will yell at me. oh well.

I am also a patient at NS and October I will be doing round #2 IUI, do u feel comfortable mentioning the dr you are currently w/ at NS?
I had Dr Chu while my primary was on vacation and found her delivery of information straightforward and not very professional.

Re: So confused re: IUI

before DD I always O'ed CD17-19 but on Clomid it was CD14-15. the meds can change when you O. i think you need more info. when you go for monitoring, whether they just tell you or you have to ask.

I am so sorry that you are so frustrated during this stressful time! I would change doctors ASAP. I could never tolerate a doctor talking to me like that. As a patient you certainly have a right to know what is going on. You need to be your own patient advocate Chat Icon

I still have yet to test positive on an OPK though and I have never not gotten a surge. I have been taking them for 9 months now, and I used them for two months when I got pregnant with my son. Can clomid cause me to not get a surge?

Re: So confused re: IUI

I've never heard of clomid not giving a surge on an opk.

Has your doctor been doing blood tests to determine your hormone levels?

Re: So confused re: IUI - Update

Okay so I went back this afternoon. I had not ovulated yet, much to the doctor's surprise. He didn't say anything to me about not going in yesterday. I think he was prepared to tell me I missed my chance by not following his advice but since I haven't ovulated or gotten a surge he really couldn't.

They did give me a trigger shot. I need to go back in tomorrow morning for another IUI. I am fairly certain that this isn't going to work given our issues but whatever. It's worth a shot I guess...

Thanks everyone for your help!

I would never pay another visit to a dr that says "just do what I say"

I would leave the practice before having to deal with someone like that again.

I am so sorry you are in this situation... it sounds awful!! These procedures are so important and can be very emotional... the last thing you need is feeling like your dr does not have your best needs at heart. It sounds like you need to change drs... good luck with this IUI!
