so ANGRY
So we just bought a christmas tree from michaels and one whole strand of lights doesnt work. I am soooo mad and upset, I was looking forward to decorating it. Can I return it, after its unboxed and set up?

YES you can definitely return it! Make sure you have the receipt when you bring it back. That would get me so angry!

Before you box it all up again, do a quick check to make sure there isn't a broken/missing light, or an incomplete circuit, or the lights connected the wrong way, etc. If you can't find a problem & it's still not working, I'm sure they would replace the tree for you at Michael's.
We had a similar problem with our new tree last year, but after replacing a broken light (wire had gotten loose and broken the circuit), it worked just fine.

I looked over the tree like 10x. There was a broken light but I changed it. Also the box says if 1 light goes out the other ones stay lit. ERRR I am so dissapointed, I even left work early tonight to decorate, figures.

I had that problem a couple of years ago with my Xmas tree, and it turns out that I had missed one of the plugs... I was soooooo mad at first, and then i felt like such a fool! I just sat back and laughed! 
But yes, I would return it!
