Snow Thursday?

Oh gosh, I had looked this afternoon and it was down to 2-4 inches. Now it says 4-8 on Thursday plus 1-2 Wednesday night and also Thursday night.

Sidenote, dh was telling me there are new state regulations about school hours so they may be less likely to close and more likely to have to make up snow days. Not happy about that.

Most districts have snow days built in. We have 3. If schools use over the amount they have built in, they do have to make them up. When we had Sandy, we had to take time from February break to make up the days the school was closed.

Right, but there was new info given by the state in the spring about what constitutes an instructional day so some districts may have less than they expected. Mainly, elementary half days do not count towards the 180 so that may pose an issue.

Re: Snow Thursday?

Follow Tri-State weather on FB. He is good.

Good Wednesday Morning

A meatball Warning is in effect! Eat them for dinner!

Headlines:
-A powerful storm in the Atlantic is creating a complex scenario.

-Today will see sun then clouds with a high around 30
-Tonight clouds with snow possible by morning especially NJ coast and LI with a low in the 20's

-Tomorrow snow develops in the morning. Now the BIG question is what does it do? Do it halt just west of NYC and then quickly exits the area only leaving a few inches of snow OR does it back in all the way to eastern PA and cover the entire area?
Right now for LI/eastern CT I would say 6-12+ is a good bet. Now for NYC/Westchester/dutchess/western CT I would say a 3-6/4-8 inch snowfall. West of there it drops off dramatically from a coating to 3 inches (west to east).

-Now I know you going to say XYZ says this and XYZ says that. Why? because the models keep shifting west and have varying outcomes. The 6Z Nam (which I thought would do this 24-36 hrs ago) did it this morning. Gives a big storm to everyone but it is an off hour model run which I do not trust. We need to wait until the next run around 9am.

-Also the NWS service pointed this out:
"06z NAM, has taken a significant shift westward from 00z
with its frontogenetic forcing, showing potential for 1 ft+ snow
across the entire area. For this reason, NHC will be doing a
reconnaissance flight and several dropsondes this
afternoon/evening off the Fl/SE US coast to better capture this
phasing and convection latent heat release in the models."

-So while I pointed out amount these will likely to change for better or worse. Also Strong winds behind the storm will cause problems. There will be coastal flooding issues as well and with ice chunks due to the cold weather please be prepared along the coast. After this storm leaves we will be bitterly cold with highs struggling to reach 10 fri/sat

-We will keep you updated and sorry for the long explanation but I want our followers informed. - Adam

I don't think this is true. I live upstate - capital district - and many schools have already taken 1-2 snow days. Snow days are built into the calendar. You only have to make them up if you go over.

If anything, I feel like districts by me have been calling more snow days even when the weather isn't that bad. They are being overly cautious especially since municipalities by me are capable of doing snow removal efficiently - I know this is often not the case on LI.

I think most elementary schools got rid of their half days this year. I know ours did, and many neighboring districts. We used to have the entire last week of school as half days...no more. But we still have 3 days built in for snow. There are 183 instructional days on the calendar right now.

We have half days for parent/teacher conferences. We had 2 in December already

I think that counts as an instructional day though. Our half days did not, as they were just half days for no reason at all! I know that Superintendent conference days count as "instructional days" also.

Googled this

Half days scheduled for elementary school students on days that count as Regents Exam Days do not count toward the 180 days.
Half days scheduled on any ‘end-of-year’ days before Regents Exam Days do not count toward the 180 days.
Half days scheduled before scheduled vacation days for any grade levels, such as the days before Thanksgiving, do not count toward the 180 days.
Half days scheduled for kindergarten students enrolled in the district’s full day kindergarten program do not count toward the 180 days.
Half days scheduled for any grade level to conduct staff development or parent teacher conferences, when they are in addition to four Superintendent’s Conference Days, do not count toward the 180 days unless the weekly minimum hours of instruction required in regulation can still be met in the week in which such half days are scheduled. (see #8a. below)

So who knows. I guess if you have less than 4 actual Sup. conference days, your half days count as instructional? I think our district has 1 or 2 sup. conference days

We do too. The ones we had in December looks like they were lined up with superintendent conference days though. We have two in June too though. I've read our calender and the nysed memo and I'm still confused. I think our district is okay but we have 184 days and start losing vacation after 2 snow days.
