Re: Smart Watch
The apple ones? They are saying they "should" be out by the end of this year. From what I understand, right now, and it does remain to be seen for apple, but smartwatches just serves and a notification center via bluetooth and really lets you know you need to check your phone. It does not have the same functions as a phone and you will still need to rbing your phone with you. I dont think it has app functions, either, at least not yet.
This is all just based on stuff Ive been reading on it bc I think its really cool, but personally, I dont think the technology and interfacing is there yet for them. You will still need your phone, so might as well just have one thing to check instead of two, alerting you to the same thing.
Personally, Id give it a few generations before I bought one.

Smart Watch
Android will have some pretty cool wearable watches in the next 2 months. Not sure when Apple will announce one. If you want something today, Pebble would be something to look at.

Pebble.. Hubby and friend's hubby both have one. I have to say its pretty damned AWESOME! The faces are changeable images (computerized of course) so he has AJ's photo which rotates with the time, weather, star wars, game updates, emails, texts messages and incoming calls. It's FUN!

- You still need your phone Except when your phone is charging, your toddler has it playing games, or its put away in your purse or bag. Or in my case I'm too lazy to get up and pick up my phone (because I'm not one connected to it at my hip) Its much easier to look at your wrist quickly. We had Google Voice/Wave so my calls would forward to his phone if I didn't answer and his Pebble would tell me. So there were times I was sewing on a patch or hands dirty with food prep. I'd hear my phone ring and tell Jim "Your phone is about to get a call" and he'd be busy too and could just look on his wrist "Hey its your Aunt" and I'd choose to answer it or let it got to voicemail.
And actually he can reply to texts messages on his Pebble.
His Pebble updates him on his Yankees, my Spurs and weather reports. The apps are very user friendly and you can do so very much with it.
