Slow Fe Iron Supplements

I know a lot of you take them, as directed by your Dr. How many do you take a day?

I passed my glucose test, but my hemoglobin count was a little low, I guess anything below 11 is low, and I had a 10.9, so they told me to take iron supplements twice a day, no dosage instructions. So I called today, as there are various dosages out there (26mg, 50 mg, 65mg), and the nurse (through the secretary) said to take Slow-Fe, but to make sure I take it twice a day. Seems like A LOT of iron, no, especially since I was just under? I'll do it, but wanted to make sure. The secretary got confused when I asked about it again Chat Icon

Re: Slow Fe Iron Supplements

I just got my pills yesterday and the box said to either take one or two pills a day according to the doctor. I think that two pills plus my prenatal is ALOT. I am going to call the office in a few minutes to see what they say.

Oh, cool, keep me posted, please!! I thought it sounded like A LOT too, since it says on the front of the box about it being a once-a-day pill!! But I've seriously spoken to the office twice now, and they are clueless, so I don't trust them! Chat Icon

I take one a day as per my docs directions.

My prenatal also contains iron.

I have to take additional calcium as well.

Re: Slow Fe Iron Supplements

seems like a lot to me too.

My iron is lower then yours, and I dont take anything. Mostly b/c my stomach is so bad, and iron can really upset your stomach, so the Dr. Is watching it rather then treating it yet.

I would say take EXTRA colace or Stool softner just in case, and just watch for stomach cramps from too much Iron.

Re: Slow Fe Iron Supplements

I just called the doctors office and they said to take one pill a day - which I am happy about because I don't want to be overloaded on Iron!

Re: Slow Fe Iron Supplements

So, a nurse from my Dr.'s office called back (I didn't even ask them to call me back Chat Icon ) at work, to go over the iron with me. She says that yes, I should get the Slow-Fe, and yes, I should take it twice a day, at least until my next Dr's appointment in 3 weeks, then they may want to retest my blood to see if I can cut back to 1 a day. It just seems like a lot of iron, in addition to my prenatal, for being .1 under the limit. But whatever... I just get nervous about taking too much, but she's the 3rd person from their office that said take it twice a day.

My dr advised me to take slowfe with orange juice, once in the am, once in the pm, the only problem was that it made me very constipatedChat Icon
