Slight problem when we go to redo the floors...

We have hardwood floors throughout the house. We are going to be refinishing them in the next few weeks. NOW in our dining room...part of of (8 feet long...12 inches deep) was bumped out into the garage and is NOT hardwood but rather plywood...What the hell do we do we this???Chat Icon

Here is the DR...I outlined the area

Stick a piece of furniture over itChat Icon Just kidding. Hmm, I don't really know to be quite honest. I'd assume you can lay a few pieces of hardwood and have them redone with the rest of the floor, but that sounds to easy to be true.Chat Icon

Re: Slight problem when we go to redo the floors...

if you can look under it that might be helpful b/c if you can lower that area you might be able to install new wood in that area (but that new wood would have to go over plywood too---so it would have to be much lower so that in the end it would be level)

Re: Slight problem when we go to redo the floors...

that's so weird that its higher in that section......is tiling the DR an option? but then again, if you did that, you'd probably have to have a mud floor poured down first to even it out. I think you should see what's under the plywood and see if you can somehow get it to be lower than the wood floor and put down some new pieces of wood and get it refinished w/ the rest of the room?

keep us posted if you peek underneath the plywood!

Re: Slight problem when we go to redo the floors...

Well, as for your floor problem, I'd try to see what's under the plywood. We had a similar, yet less serious, problem in Ava's room. There was this HUGE armoire cabinet that the previous owner left for us that we wanted as storage for the basement. We had planned to keep Ava's room carpeted, but when we moved the armoire out of her room, we saw that they had carpeted around the piece of furniture and left the old carpet from the 70s underneathChat Icon
Again, not as perplexing as your issue, but still freaking annoying.
There has to be a fix for it. And while I was joking about the furniture, seeing the picture now, a hutch or sideboard would go great in that spot so if you put down different flooring there, it won't be obvious.

You think this will be a difficult thing to do???? It may be concrete because it is into the garage which is attached!

You are probably going to have to have someone come in and match the exact wood.

not sure if looking under will be difficult--who knows how they installed it---you never know what you find in these houses!!!
it might just be a little piece of plywood that they stuck in there to make the carpet floor level......if you could take a peak, i would---that would be your best bet to see if you can install would to match your existing floor
