Sleepy newborn by day, up all night!

Riley has been sleeping allllll day...

I've managed to wake her up to feed her enough times...

But I know what is coming...

We will be up ALL night! This is what she does, sleeps and passively feeds (I am breastfeeding) during the day and then she can't get enough all night long and so I'm awake sitting up in bed nursing her all night long.

DH keeps asking me if it is normal, and I think it is normal for newborns to have their day and nights confused, but she's also only 8 days old and I am getting exhausted!

Looking for tips, advice, commraderie, whatever...Chat Icon

I am going to a breastfeeding support group tomorrow with hopes that they can give me tips to get her to more actively feed during the day...with hopes that it helps with the night...we'll see how that goes!

I was worried about this back when DD was a newborn. Everyone told me to keep the shades up and the lights on all day long so they have light. And then at night make it dark (e.g. no TV on in the room) etc. To help them orient to day/night.

DD was pretty good. I was CRAZY about lights/no lights. I don't know if it really had anything to do with it, but it may help!

Good luck!

We have been sleeping with the light on Chat Icon but that is more because of my choice then hers...we haven't really tried to turn it off, I just feel like I need to be able to see her in the middle of the night and the room is SO dark without the lights on.

I do need to go and buy a table lamp and maybe I'll keep that on the other side of the room instead of having the overhead light on...but right now I'm not supposed to drive for another week!

I don't know if it actually helped or not but when the girls were sleeping during the day I had them in their rock n play sleepers and put them by the sliding glass door on sunny warm days (not in direct sun). It made me at least feel like I was showing them it was day time.

ugh im still kinda going through this... my baby is 3.5 weeks old and she sleeps very well during the day but at night, eh, it depends. we tried to wake her and keep her up at least kind of before bedtime, around 5/6ish and then ease her into the night routine. the noise level is different so i think that may help, because for me the lights didnt really make a difference i dont think. during the day the tv or radio was on, the dog would bark, we would talk at normal levels. im noticing that she is sleeping for longer periods now at night, like 3-5 hour stretches...

This was us too. They really just outgrow it. It takes time. Eventually they get it. Hang in there. I promise it goes by quick!!!

this i agree...

all three of my dc's had this..it is rough in the beginning...but it is short lived when you look back...feels like it lasts forever when you are in the thick of it!

I bf also...and would never let them go 3 hrs during the day in the first few weeks...when they reached their birth weight I pushed it to 4 hrs...but newborns do need a lot of sleep AND have small tummies that digest quickly..so that is all they really know how to do eat and sleep..so it is really something they wll get the hang of..it just may take a few weeks!

keeping them up during the day is an old wives tale..sometimes that makes their sleeping patterns worse..if all they want to do is sleep - I say let them after they have proven to be getting enough milk and is gaining the appropriate amt of weight!

good luck!
