Sleeping through the night Q.
Hi,
I am BF my daughter, she is 9 weeks today. She had her 2 mths shots this past monday and the paediatrician told me that I shouldnt be feeding her through the night at this stage and unless she cries to just give her the pacifier if she wakes up!! I was shocked as I thought I would be starving her if I did this... So I tried it last night and it worked!! She fed at 10.30pm and then again at 5.30 am .....But I feel so guilty today and feel like I should be feeding her every hour now to make up for it....
Could it be because she is still a little drowsy from the shots and a once off or do any of you have babies who would sleep 5/6 hours at night at this stage?
TIA

I am shocked that pediatrician would say that, especially about a BF baby. Breastmilk digests quickly (in 2 hours). I was always told that if the baby wakes and ***** for a minute or two and just dozes back off again they are looking for comfort and not food but if they actually nurse they are waking because they are hungry and you should feed them. My daughter is 6 months old and she still wakes to eat. She just now seem to be cutting out one of her feedings.

Thats what I had thought too....to be honest I am thinking about changing paediatricians as I think this one is a bit cracked! When I asked her about the possiblity of teething in the next two months she went off on a tangent about there being no such thing as "teething" just babies expressing their feelings My hubbie thinks she is a crazy hippie!!

Huh?! Did this chick ever HAVE a baby? Don't tell a mom who has been up every hour during the night tending to a crying TEETHING baby that there is no such thing as teething! The entire week leading up to Alex's first tooth was HELL HELL HELL! If someone told me there's no such thing as teething, I would have knocked out a few of their teeth to remind them how it feels!
Anyway, back to the point, I'm shocked as well that your pediatrician told you that your baby shouldn't be feeding at night. It's ridiculous to think that every baby fits into this magical "schedule" at a certain age. Especially breastfed babies - they tend to take longer to sleep through the night because the milk digests much quicker. My daughter is over 6 months old and she *still* wakes up for a feeding twice a night, at 11pm and 4am. And, during those times, she eats at least 4 ounces.

Too funny!! I think its time to change docs! I was so unnerved by the whole "not feeding at night" thing that I was awake all night anyway anticipating her crying so its not like I got a good nights sleep!
Thanks for putting my mind at ease and know that I should just go with my mothers instinct and not the doctors!
BTW...dont think she has any kids of her own, so she only knows what she learned at med school not from hands on experience.
