Sleepaway camps

I don't know how anyone does it for the summer. I sent my son to a "first steps" program for the week and I'm missing him like crazy.
On a side note... the camp is posting pics like crazy and he has a huge smile on his face in every one.
This was his decision to try it out bc our neighbors go to sleepaway every summer (they are older) and his cousins work and have gone to this camp during the regular camp season.
He's kayaking, on a banana boat, water slides, ziplining, swings, etc. I am in awe and a little jealous.
Can't wait to squeeze him friday morning when we go to pick him up.
Anyone else do something similiar with their kids or send them all summer?

Re: Sleepaway camps

my daughter is way too much of a home body. She would never want to to do it.
She doesn't even like being away from me for 8 hours when I am work.
Definitely never happening.

Re: Sleepaway camps

This was my daughter's second Summer at sleepaway camp. She did 3 nights last year, and 4 nights this year. Next year she will do 7 nights. She goes to a Girl Scout camp in East Hampton, and it's so nice! She LOVES it!!! I think camp is good for them, makes them a little more independent! My mom would send us three girls away for 3 weeks each Summer and we loved it! and she loved getting rid of us Chat Icon Chat Icon I don't think I could send her away for an entire Summer though! We go away a lot and do family vacations, etc. Maybe when she is a grump teenager that doesn't like her family anymore Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My girls did Blue Bay this year for 3 nights for the first time, they loved it and are already talking about going back next year.

ITA! I think it'll make him more independent. He was so excited. He didn't know anyone either and it's for 5 nights. He has a huge smile in all the pics though and looks like he's making friends.

I never went but my DH did since age 6
He is still best friends with all the people he met
He says a lot of why he is the way he is is because of camp :) glad your son is having fun!

DH went to sleepaway camp so he assumed we would send our kids when they're older. I'm super attached to our kids and think he's crazy. But, we know some people who sent one or both kids this summer and 1. it looks like the kids have an AWESOME TIME! and 2. dreaming of a child-free summer sounds amazing, even though I would miss the kids. Anyway, our kids are only 5 and 3 right now, so we have a lot of time to make the decision. But I think I'm more willing to send them than I used to be. Also, our neighbor is a director at a sleepaway camp, so that has helped me feel more at ease.

I'm glad they liked it!! It's such a great camp! We are actually Suffolk County GS's, and I found the camp on accident a couple of years ago! Most people think it's only for Nassau!

P.S., did anyone see the show "Bug Juice" on the Disney Channel this Summer? That camp looks AMAZING!!

Sleepaway camps

My guys are still little but I am 100% looking into sleepaway options when they are a bit older. Their day camp partners with a sleepaway camp, where they split the summer between the two. Camp is awesome! My son LOVES it and had learned so much.

Many families near send the kids for 7 weeks of sleep away. It looks so fun but I can’t allow my guys to be away for 7 weeks. I’m too anxious and don’t trust anyone and my DH would cry all summer Chat Icon
