sleep positioner-FYI

i just got back from an infant safety class at the hospital. They do not recommend the sleep positioner as it is considered a suffocating hazard because it is soft. They said if you want to position your baby on the side or whatever to use a receiving blanket rolled up.

Can I have the nurse's name please and contact info? Chat Icon

Someone gave us one and I refuse to use it. Meanwhile, in the hospital, they recommended we tilt the bed so as to promote the formula staying down. DH got mad (Chat Icon ) when I refused to figure out how to make the bed slanted. I mean...Chat Icon how are you supposed to SAFELY do that? So then he tried to get me to use that positioner so that we could put him on his side (another alternative to tilting the bed). I told him I didn't like the idea and that no one recommends you use them. He decided I was being stubborn. Chat Icon

Re: sleep positioner-FYI

My PED is against these things too. baby can wiggle down and get their face caught against the softness of the pillow. They are such a sids risk.

I raised her crib for acid reflux issues and bought a crib wedge to put under the sheet, only because of the reflux.

I didn't even use rolled up blankets, didn't see the need, plus DD hated anything that confined her.

Re: sleep positioner-FYI

It is crazy how many different opinions I have gotten on this subject from people who you would trust.

My friend is a resident in pediatrics at a hospital in NYC and asked the head ped there and he said the idea of the positioner causing SIDS is outdated and they actually recc it now for safety - to keep baby on back and for the baby's head shape.

Go figure! I don't know aht to do!

Here's a link to a thread on parenting last week about this same topic. Has a link to a consumer reports video on it.
