Sleep methods/theories

Which worked for you? Trying to get some ideas, Andy's been waking up every hour the past 2 weeks or so and I'm losing my mind.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Sleep methods/theories

In the beg- around 4-5 months....

CIO all the way-

AS he got older I was less and less successful with this method, and then decided to co-sleep (so I prob wasnt successful, because I wasnt consistent)

I have no idea what method Im using now- Its the- "you can sleep whereever, whenever you wanna, as long as your sleeping" methodChat Icon

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child -- my friend SWEARS by this book. It's basically CIO.

Her daughter has a great sleep/nap schedule. But in all honestly, I think the kid is just a good sleeper. (And I have to wonder if it is genetic -- my friend LOVES to sleeps -- she used to come home from high school and sleep for a few hours, and then sleep at night for another 8-10 hours -- what teeneager does that?!?!)

My friend follows it VERY strictly -- it's like her Bible. She's buying it for me as one of my shower gifts. I'm scared, actually -- she's the type that will be pi$$ed if I don't follow it to the "T" Chat Icon

Bottom line, though, I think the book has some v. good techniques and theories (i.e., sleep begets sleeps).

I have this book, I loved it but I don't believe its CIO at all.....At least none of the 5 S's that he talks about include letting your child cry (I am pro CIO by the way...) It basically tells you how to comfort your child and continue them feeling safe as they did in the womb.....

I think that you need to take a combination of everytihing into consideration while trying to get better sleep habits, for example when my boy was teensy, the 5 S's worked absolute wonders for him, when he got a bit older, CIO worked wonders for him (it worked brilliantly and he never cried for more than 25 minutes in the beginning!!) so I wouldn't say that any ONE thing would work for any one baby! They are all different!!!

Wow this stuff makes me nervous when it comes to having #2.

I guess we are just very lucky. DS started sleeping through the night at 12 weeks and never stopped. He loves his sleep just like his mommy Chat Icon

Re: Sleep methods/theories

Luckily my boys have been good sleepers, and if they wake up in the middle of the night it is because they are hungry.
They take many naps during the day, so I herad that is good, and says to do it in The Healthiest Happy Baby.

Im NOT a fan of CIO at such a young age

The five S's are the Happiest Baby on the Block, not Healthy Sleep Habits.

Re: Sleep methods/theories

Healthy Sleep Habits is NOT CIO. It advocates letting the child cry, but also gives the option of a no cry solution which takes longer for the child to adjust to their sleep habits.

This book SAVED us and was so helpful. Now, when she wakes in the middle of the night, we let her cry and it's never more than 1 or 2 min. I didn't realize that she has even more teeth cutting through which is why she's been waking more and crying like she's in pain. Last night with Motrin, she woke, but put herself back to sleep each time she woke within 2 minutes.

At 12 mths, I went BACK to it to read up on the strategies for when they cut back to one nap and the book made me feel a lot better about revolving MY schedule around hers so she gets to sleep in her own crib.

I guess my friend did not opt for the no cry solution because she totally let's her kid CIO...

I did not read the book yet; I'm just going off what she explained to me in detail ad nauseum....

I did the No Cry Sleep Solution with Emma, I am not a fan of CIO. Jeremy has slept through the night since 2 weeks old so I can't complain with him.

Re: Sleep methods/theories

What we did/do is closest to the No Cry Sleep Solution. We will sometimes let her cry a short amount of time though (less than 5 minutes) so maybe that's CIO but 99% of the time if she cries we go to soothe her or if she clearly is not going to go to sleep we bring her out and let her play about 15-20 minutes longer and then she will typically go right down to sleep.
She does wake during the night at times and cries out but within less than a minute she is laying down and back to sleep so I don't feel the need to go into her because I'm not even sure if she's actually awake.

Thanks everyone! He's definately up up, not just fussing. I give him a few minutes to see if he'll go back and he doesn't.

I tried CIO the past few nights but he's so upset when I go in after 15 minutes that it takes about 45 mins to calm him down.

CIO didn't work for Sarah either, she was the same way, super upset and even vomited a few times. But Andy is more low key than her, I thought it might work for him. I feel like a failure, it seems so easy for everyone else. Chat Icon

I'm re-reading the No Cry Sleep Solution now. I'd started it when Sarah was having problems but she suddenly started sleeping great on her own so I never really finished it. And Shana's lending me Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child to read.

Re: Sleep methods/theories

CIO worked for Jack and I saw immediate changes after just one night. So that is why we continued.
