Slate?

Has anyone used slate for their walkway or stoop?

Is it cheaper than pavers?

Re: Slate?

I LOVE slate, this is what I wanted to do. I got vetoed tho by DH and the construction guy --- it breaks easily, it stains easily, doesn't hold up well to the winter (salt, expansion, etc.)

Growing up we had a slate walkway - lovely but always a mess -- chipped, cracked, broken and grass growing up in every single crack.

I think it is more expensive than pavers too.

Re: Slate?

Slate also gets pretty slippery when wet.

Re: Slate?

Wow! My parents have a slate patio, and I think its held up pretty well.

I got a price yesterday for pavers and it was $5300 just for our stoop and a small walkway (plus $3k to blacktop our driveway). I was Chat Icon Chat Icon I didn't even get as far as to have them price out the other side of the walkway!!!

I was just trying to find a cheaper alternative.

Any ideas? Dh already nixed the idea of asphalt for the walkway.

Re: Slate?

Concrete would be cheaper than pavers. Pavers are expensive partly because the installation is more involved than concrete or asphalt (blacktop).

Re: Slate?

How about stamped concrete? They pour the concrete into forms or stamp a pattern on the wet concrete to make it look like all different kinds of stone.

This site has a lot of pictures

How did I know you were going to ask that?! Chat Icon
I don't know actually, sorry, but I do know that it's one of the cheaper options. If your DH is handy, he could even do it himself. They sell the forms.
