there is not a lot of nutrients in cereal - the idea is to skip the liking of carbs

there are lots reasons to skip, but there are reasons to use too

I started cereal after I had given other foods - used cereal to change textures of my purees or babyfood purees - also when I was BFing it was a way to add iron in

if you taste the fm and cerial or bm and cereal it tastes pretty gross

I started with avocado for my oldest and my twins started with sweet potato -

each your own - there really is lots of ways that do just fine

If you decide to skip cereal make sure LO is getting the iron from elsewhere!

Re: skipping cereal

I started w/cereals with DD1. Skipped them altogether with DD2 because:

1) Plain cereal tastes a little like the smell of drywall lol. DD1 hated them. I wanted DD2's first experience to be more fun.

2) It's not particularly nutritious. Anything that's been processed as much as baby cereals (even the organic ones) probably isn't good. Grains can be very hard for babies to digest.

3) There's no real reason to start with cereals. It's highly unlikely that a baby will have an allergic reaction to rice or oatmeal, but lots of fruits and veggies are equally safe. (Have you ever heard of anyone having a life-threatening allergy to peas or apples?)

Like a PP said, there are lots of ways to introduce foods. There are whole feeding theories that advise skipping purees and go straight for finger foods. Do what you're comfortable with.

Most formula is fortified with iron, and BM has enough iron as-is. If there's a reason to be concerned with iron consumption, many multivitamins have it.

Re: skipping cereal

DD had a milk protein allergy, and we have a family history of severe food allergies. The ped strongly suggested we start with rice cereal bc it is the least allergenic, and if for some reason her body was not ready for food, it would be possible for her to have a bad reaction.
I know of one baby that was covered in hives after eating a sweet potato, we were all dumfounded. Who woulda thought? But that is extremely rare.

I don't know anyone in real life that skipped cereal. I say trust your gut and your doctor.
