Sizing on girl's winter coats?

Last year we didn't have this issue because she was in the infant seat with the cover on- so we never needed a winter coat!

My question- do you normally size up a bit to accomodate bulky clothes underneath?
Or just buy the normal size?

Also- do you size up in anticipation of them growing over the winter months?

I'm so confused!

Re: Sizing on girl's winter coats?

I always size up to accommodate the stuff underneath and so that they get alot of wear out of it

Re: Sizing on girl's winter coats?

I'm confused with this as well. Last year my DD had the childrens place 3 in 1 jacket sized 6-9 months which was a bit big for her. She is 14 months now and I tried it on the other day and it still fits.... Weird, my DD is in 18 months + clothing and is 80-90% tile in weight and height. I have to go try these jackets on in the stores. I had a 12 month old winter bubble jacket that was a hand me down and shes swimming in it.

I find that the 3 in 1 runs big (as well as a lot of other CP things) - I got DS the 12 months last year (he was wearing 9-12 or 6-12 months at the time I purchased) and he was able to wear it through the season (and he was in 12-18 month old regular clothing by that point). I think this year I'm going to get him the 24 months.

Re: Sizing on girl's winter coats?

try them on her. my DD2 is 15 months and wears 18 month clothing....she is 75%tile for height and 25%tile for weight (I have skinny girls). The 12m Osh Kosh coat was big on her and that's the size I bought.

Re: Sizing on girl's winter coats?

I got a few coats last year after Christmas so I figured I'd buy the size coordinating to the age. She will be close to 18 months when she needs to wear a coat. I tried them on her now and they seem a little big so I am hoping she will grow into it.

I have to oshkosh coats and a london fog. I think they run a little larger.

Last year DD wore a 12-24 month coat from Gymboree. This year she has a 2T from Crazy 8 and a 3T from the Gap.

Re: Sizing on girl's winter coats?

I always go a size up..bec they will basically be wearing it for possibly 6-7-8 months (oct/nov - mar/apr) so I wanted to account for growth spurts and heavy sweaters/clothing underneath!

Re: Sizing on girl's winter coats?

When I buy online, unless I already know the particular brand and how their sizing works, I buy slightly larger so that if it doesn't fit this year, it will )hopefully) fit next year.

Coat sizes are all over the place for me depending on brand, but no, I don't buy up because of bulky clothes. Last year I bought their regular sizes and they were on the big side. My girls still fit into them for this year, and last year my older one often wore her little sister's coat. (It was 12-18 mths, and my daughter was 2+ during the winter.)

I have been having trouble shopping for dd lately. First off I like nothing Chat Icon 2nd the sizing is crazy. The inches never match up to her weight. The 12-18 month seems to be getting small on her but 18-24 or 2t is still big on her. She's in 50% for weight and 95% for height.

ANyway back to your question, do they have measurements on line? I would go up a size.

Yes they do have sizing online.
Right now it looks like 18 months would fit perfect and at least fit for a while.
However, she hasn't been weighed and measured since her last ped visit in early July- so I don't even know what she weighs or measures now.

And then I worry about bulky clothes underneath or growth spurts.
After all it's a LONG winter around these parts!

I have a boy, but I got DS' winter coat and fall jacket in his next size. So for example, this summer he's been wearing size 12-18 months. He JUST turned 18 months old.

For fall and winter jackets and coats, I bought size 18-24 months. They are kinda big right now still, but it didn't make sense to buy his current size when I want them to last for the next six months, KWIM?

But I also wouldn't buy size 2T yet. I'm not a fan of clothes that look like they're swimming on kids.

See I wish they had 18-24 months- that would be a good compromise.
But they only have 18 months then it jumps to 24 months.
She is on the smaller side- and I find that the sizing charts are always off for her.
Like if they say this size will fit 19-25 pounds- even if she is in that range it seems big on her.
That is making me think I should stick with 18 months- but I don't know.

Unless I'm mistaken, size 24 months is the same as size 18-24 months. Like Carter's clothes that say 3 months or 9 months. It's really up to 3 months, up to 9 months, etc. So I'd say 24 months is up to 24 months. And since the previous size is 18 months, I'd say it's 18-24 months.

BUT if the size chart shows 24 months is way bigger than she is now, maybe it runs big.

Your DD has been wearing size 18 months for how long now? And how do her size 18 months clothes fit? If she is fitting them more closely, I'd probably not get the size 18 months.

BUT not to completely confuse you, the coats could run big. For example, I got DS the bubble coats from Old Navy last winter and he wore a size down in them. They definitely ran big.

I'm no help, sorry!

Actually she is still in 12 month clothes and some 18 months things- but a lot of the 18 month stuff is still slightly big on her- especially Carter's.

I really think I might have to buy from a store so I can see it and try it on her.

If she is just now getting into 18 months and some 12 month stuff still fits, then I would do 18 months. At this age the growth spurts are not as often and dramatic as when they are in the 1st year. I find most winter coats run big.

Re: Sizing on girl's winter coats?

I think the answer depends on the child. I know a lot of people who go up a size. I could not do that for DD#1. The sleeves of her size are already too long and they are bunched up to get her hands out. The next size looks ridiculous on her - if it is too big they don't keep the warm air in the jacket.

DD#2 on the other hand was wearing a 2 yr jacket last year. It was big but it was fine on her. I think if you have any questions I would take your DC to the store and let them try on a few jackets to see how they fit before ordering online.

I thought she was already in size 18 months for a while. If she's still wearing 12 months, I'd definitely NOT get the 24 months coat.
