Sippy Cup - help with getting them started...

DS is a year old and i know I probably should have introduced a sippy cup sooner, but I am clueless. Now I'm trying to do it and he will not drink from it. Any suggestions on how to make this transition? I'm so upset I did not do this months ago.

Someone on here gave me the advice to take out the valve and fill up the cup with water. That way they get the idea that there is something to drink in there. It was messy, but only took one try. The next time, i put the valve back in and there was no stopping DS. GL!

we only use straw cups. dd took a couple days to drink from them, but got the idea...that was at 9 months. of course, i was clueless too and only put water in them...we had to go cold turkey to get her to accept milk out of them. now she drinks milk from them like the world's supply is drying up!

Thanks ladies. Are the straw cups just an alternative to the sippy?

The straw cups are very different- unlike a good sippy, they will leak if tipped. I would keep trying to find a sippy your child would like. We waited to long with DD and finally she took the kind with the soft top like a bottle.

The nuby straw ones I have do not leak. Also, SLP's say straw cups are better than sippy cups.

not the munchkin ones! those don't leak at all, i love them!

we tried 3 kinds of sippy cups and that is the one we like the best:

Mighty Grip™ 10 oz. Flip Straw Cup

LINK

before now (11 months) we were not consistent with giving him his sippy at all. now we offer it all the time. it took a few tries but DS got the hang of it quickly. i highly recommend this one!!

Thank so much - this is very helpful. I'm also wondering if I give him something like apple juice in the sippy, he might take to it better.

i'm a speech therapist- the straw cups are better for the babies speech development, because they have to use a more mature lip and tongue movement to drink out of them. so that helps them to be able to make the speech sounds better. the regular sippy cup just uses the same basic sucking motion they use for breastfeeding or the bottle.

I would agree, but not every child has the oral motor skills to start on a straw sippy cup from the get go. Abby cannot use a straw yet. We are working towards that.

Re: Sippy Cup - help with getting them started...

When DS was younger I could not start with a straw cup because he had no idea how to use them. I started with a sippy cup when he was 13 months old. I just got rid of the bottle cold turkey and he never had a problem.
