Silly Questions About Walking the Dog...

OK - as some of you may know, we just moved to Florida. In NY, we had a fenced backyard, which was great, b/c we could let PuppyDog out any time on her own. Now, we have to walk the dog. I made the rule that whoever got to get up later in the am, had to walk the dog in the am. Since DH just left this morning, to go finish up work in NY for two weeksChat Icon I am on my own with the dog.
Dumb questions - how many times do I walk her a day? Do you walk the dog the moment you get up, or right before you leave for work? It's really hot here so I think I'd rather throw on shirt and shorts and walk in am before I get ready - def not looking forward to getting up earlier! I walked her when I got home from work today and haven't walked her since then (around 4:30) - do you typically walk 2x in the evening or just before you go to bed?
I know these are silly questions, but I can use some adviceChat Icon
Thanks!

Re: Silly Questions About Walking the Dog...

Bella gets walked at least 3 times a day. Who ever gets up first walks her, except the days where DH goes to work before 5. This morning she was still sleeping so I was able to shower and get ready before I walked her in the morning. Then she gets walked around 4 when I come home, and then DH usually does the last walk before bed around 10:30-11. She really dictates when she needs to be walked, we just follow her cues.

Re: Silly Questions About Walking the Dog...

I am not sure if this will help you isnce we have a fenced in back yard BUT we just let him out in the morning ---At around 8 am he goes out and pees, then comes in and eats and then goes back out to poop.
When I get home in the afternoon around 4 he is immediatly taken out for a walk.
Then he is periodically let out in the backyared during the day to pee. (he will only poop on deck in the am).
Then we walk him again around 10 pm where he will always pee and poop before bed.
On the weekends I try and take him for 3 walks per day but still is let out to pee throughout the day.
HTH a little

Re: Silly Questions About Walking the Dog...

Before we moved into our house we walked the dogs 3 times a day. Once before we left for work in the morning, when we got home from work, and before we went to bed. For the most part this worked out well. Once in awhile we took an extra walk if needed or if the weather was beautiful.

on average:

she is walked in the morning (sometimes first thing, sometimes right before we leave) could be anywhere between 6:30am -10am depending on FH class schedule

walked again at 4pm when FH gets home from class

fed at 5:30pm

walked again at around 8pm

walked before bed - anywhere between 10:30pm - midnight

Re: Silly Questions About Walking the Dog...

In Florida it is so HOT!!!! I know my friends with pets down there hardly ever walk their dog. Don't worry how many times, it is too much for them to be out longer than 5 minutes in that heat, I used to live in Tampa I know Florida summers. You still have about 2 months left of this weather.
i would do 3, I am no expert and just learning puppy stuff myself but
One walk in the AM
One when you come home
Final one before bed. You can play indoors some throw and catch.
Have fun! Good luck! Hope you enjoy your new home!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Silly Questions About Walking the Dog...

Try and do your longest walks before it gets too hot.
Right away in the morning before you get ready - your pups been holding it all nightChat Icon
Do a short walk later in the day or after work.
And then a nice long walk before bedtime in the evening.
If you want to do more when it gets cooler that's fine, but for just going to the bathroom - three walks should be fine.

i think the frequency of walks really depends on the dog.

i think sophie is part camel because she can hold her stuff forever! owen, on the other hand, needs to go more frequently.

we end up walking the dogs twice a day. in the morning we do it after showering and getting dressed, but before eating breakfast. in the evening we do it about 45-60 minutes after they've had their food.

owen also gets let out in the backyard at least twice a day in addition to the walks for peeing, pooping, and running around like a lunatic.
