Silly Q re: carseats

We're going to register tonight and I noticed some of you mention a convertible carseat, what exactly does this mean?

Re: Silly Q re: carseats

It's the seat that the child uses when they reach the max for the infant carrier. I assume they call it convertible bc it can be used both rear and forward facing.

Re: Silly Q re: carseats

Convertible means that it goes from infant to toddler.

I have read that infant seats should be purchased strictly for infants and then when the baby is bigger to buy another car seat.

Basically, the books recommend you biy 2 --one now and one later.......dont buy convertible

Re: Silly Q re: carseats

Thank you.

So is there a specific name for the non-infant ones?

Or just make sure it doesn't say convertible?

I'm looking into Graco & Britax

These are convertible seats

Britax Roundabouts

Evenflo Triumph

You use them after the baby growns out of these usually 20-24lbs and 29 inches

You can register for both types if you want to

Re: Silly Q re: carseats

convertible seats are for convertibles. kidding.

they are the ones you can use for an infant through the toddler years/time.

personally, i've found the infant carriers to be a bit of a $$ making racket plus, as a small woman, i gain nothing from using them as i can't lift a 15 pound baby sitting inside of one. i used a convertible from birth with my first and plan to do so with all my children as she was quite secure and snug in there. besides, we have to buy 3 carseats...i am NOT buying 6 in one year.Chat Icon

Re: Silly Q re: carseats

Ok, let me just see if I got this straight....baby goes from infant seat (we're thinking Graco Snugride) & then onto the step 2 (perhaps Graco Comfortsport or Britax___) & then from there they'd most likely go to a booster (based on weight/size?)

Will the convertible NOT usually take them from toddler to booster?

Sorry again for stupid q's....

Yes to your first question..... Yes after the child outgrows the convertible (ie, graco comfortsport), they will move to a booster seat which usually holds up to 100lbs.

Yes you are right.

FOr example though the Britax marathon only takes kids up to 60lbs.

Kids need to be in a seat until they are 4'9'' and i "think" the weight is 80-100 lbs.
After they grow out of the convertible you would need to get a booster for that short time til they reach height/weight.

A little more info - I am pretty sure the Britax Marathon has the highest weight limit and will last you the longest. The person in the store told me that with the Britax Marathon you may never have to go to a booster seat, but I'm not sure how accurate that info is.

Re: Silly Q re: carseats

The Britax Marathon is up to 65 lbs actually and I know A few people who never needed a booster. Thats why we registered for that one. It saves you money likely in the end.

Re: Silly Q re: carseats

I registered for the Infant car seat because you can remove it from your car and don't need to take the baby out of the seat. You can also "mount" the seat on the stroller or snap n go while leaving the baby in the car seat. It comes with a base that you leave in your car. You can even get another base for another car (DH).

You cannot remove the removible carseat from the car. It is usually rear or front facing and goes from infant to toddler. Just be careful because some of them are not well adaptable for infant and head support.

That is so awesome! I seriously do not want to spend more money on carseats after the Britax.

We only registered for an infant seat. For some reason I am against registering for something I won't use until the baby is older. Plus my SIL registered for both and only got the convertible which she couldn't use yet.
