SIL was involved in an attempted scam
SIL was driving with my nephew in the car, and was tapped from behind. The driver, an older woman in a 90's Mustang, came out screaming at her, saying SIL backed into her. There was a "witness" there saying they saw SIL back up into her. SIL said fine, there's a traffic camera right there, that'll prove I didn't back up....and the woman changed her story. The cop even called the woman a lunatic.
The cop said they tap you from behind, claim you backed into them, hope you panic and can't afford to put it on your insurance or pay for the damage, and say ok just pay us this much in cash. They hope you'll pay them just to get rid of them.
Just wanted to give you all a head's up!

I saw a story about this years ago on 20/20 or Dateline.
People will think of anything to scam others.
It's terrible.

She stuck around for the cops. I didn't get the details of what she changed her story to, but it sounded like she took the blame for it instead of screaming at my SIL that she backed up into her. The cop told the woman she was a lunatic.

If she left the scene that's a hit & run. My feeling as to why she stuck around but what nerve to cause a tap, then say your SIL backed up into her. Seriously? ?? At a red light?
