signing "milk" vs. open/close vs. hi/bye

DD is almost 9 months. when i say "open and close" she opens and closes her fist. The thing is, when i also say milk (when i nurse) I also do this motion. And then when anyone says hi or bye to her, they use the open and close hand motion as well. sometimes she looks really confused! lol.

did anyone else encounter this? im not sure how to differentiate, or if its just something they'll figure out in due time. if she opens and closes her fist, how do i know what she wants...milk, to play, or saying hi/bye.

Re: signing "milk" vs. open/close vs. hi/bye

the sign "milk" should have her thumb pointing straight up in the air.

signing "hi/bye" can be more of a horizontal position of her hand.

Thanks. I know the signs but DD is only 9 months old. Do you think she can differentiate the subtle signs of each? To me, it looks like no matter what shes trying to say, the hand is always horizontal and her fingers are sort of facing towards her body. I assumed that at this age, she wouldn't be able to sign milk the proper way with her hand vertical that way.

There are a few things you can try to differenciate. Again, position of hand is one. The other could be her thumb straight up for milk and against her hand for hi/bye. Also, milk is a quick squeezing action, when hi/bye can be a bit slower.
But like you said, she IS still young. She will work on it and get better. If she is looking for a bottle, you can assume she is signing milk, KWIM?
