Sickness at Day Care

Does anyone know the NYS requirements about notifying parents of communicable diseases at day care?

I ask because I've never gotten a notice home from my children's day care about another child being sick, but obviously, there have been sick children (including my own). Some parents I was talking to this weekend thought it was a requirement to send home a written letter. I figured I'd ask here before I Googled it.

ETA: I don't mean common colds. I mean stomach virus, pink eye, flu, and worse.

I'm more curious if this is a requirement by the state. Not just common practice.

Re: Sickness at Day Care

I get notices home from daycare if there is a diagnosed contagious bug that a child in class or on his bus has such as strep or pink eye. Not if someone has the common cold.

Re: Sickness at Day Care

At mine they would just post a notice on the door.
But only for things like Strep, Pink Eye, Influenza, Coxsakie, etc
Not for stomach bug or colds

Mine posts a note on the door also for things like pink eye, roseola. Someone in the class always has a runny nose or cough so they don't post things like that.

We only get notices for certain illnesses such as pink eye, strep, chicken pox, coxsackie and roseola. There are other illnesses on the form too like measles and mumps. They only distribute it to children in the same class as the infected child.

If there is a huge stomach bug sweeping the center - they tend to send home a memo.

This.

I've gotten a notice home a few times about coxsackie. Never for just general illnesses like a cold or stomach virus.

We get a written note on our daily report about big things: lice, coxsackie, etc. For other things, they mention it at drop off/pick up.

Never received a note about any illness but to my knowledge, there hasn't been a major outbreak of anything other than a cold. It's a very small place though.

DS goes to a preschool and yes we do get notes sent home about certain illnesses like coxsackie, etc. My DD goes to a home daycare though and we don't get notes like that.

We get a note through their report system. But its not for common things - cold, flu etc - it would only be for highly contagious things or lice.

i think your child and mine go to the same daycare and i was also speaking to some moms about this issue.

she told me her son had pink eye and i was like well why didn't i get a note home.

i have gotten one over the summer for coxsackie.

i would also love to know the answer.

Isn't it only one of those if they are sick at school things?
I mean you go home and find your kid is sick, find out it's pink eye then stay home, treat and he or she is clear for school (not contagious) then goes to school but technically still has pink eye then no report is sent.

I mean it's contagious yes, but not in it's state then no report. Now if a kid is sick and mom calls the school to say "Hey my kid has mono and we didn't know and has had it for a week, it's possible others may be sick" a note should go home.

I guess I'm saying a note is only necessary if it's possible that it could have or will spread.

Obviously colds, no.

I've seen tons of sick kids at preschool/Day care. Never made a difference. Never got a note unless it was something still going around like a tummy bug. But frankly they just told us they were trying to keep stuff clean.

Both of my kids have been sent home with pink eye and a note never went home. And a baby in DD's class last week was sent home with pink eye, and again, no note.

I'm just trying to understand if it's a state requirement that they notify parents of this kind of stuff. I don't want to bug the school if it's not a requirement.

Sickness at Day Care

You say sent home with pink eye but I wonder how could they really know it was? Because my daughter was 'sent home' with an ear infection and fever while in daycare when I proved they were DEAD wrong and forced her back into daycare the next day. They aren't doctors. Not even remotely close. They see tons of stuff yes but that doesn't make them experts. Therefore I'm not sure they CAN say it's pink eye without being notified by the parent who heard from a doctor, ya know?

AJ had impetigo. Which *IS* contagious and she had all the classic signs and open sores an was never sent home. Why? Because she has eczema. I only clued in when it got to her scalp. By the time I stopped it with meds she was cleared for school because her sores were only contagious of touched and they were all covered at that point. But honestly she was at school nearly a week with this junk and no one ever said a word. Impetigo is highly contagious. No note was sent home that notified anyone that she'd ever had it. I, myself, notified the school nurse because I felt it was the right thing to do, even though she was no longer putting any other child at risk. Even with that, nothing was ever said since by the time I notified them the damage (if any) was done and there was no future risk. No reason to start a panic.

Mind you, our nurse is a RN. She'd see AJ for the sores no less.

ETA: sorry for the ramble.. but I don't know the state regs for New York. Can you just call them up and point blank ask? At grade school level, it's in our district guidelines.

This. The notices are right when you walk it where you punch in your code- you can't miss them. I have noticed that if it's something in the classroom or for certain illnesses I will get a notice in my DS' bag to go home.
