Shower Location Question (A little long...)
I live in CT. 97% of my family and friends except my ILs and a couple friends live on LI. I have always gone "home" (DH hates when I say that) for everything. I only live 2 hours away from most places I have to go to on LI. I go home for almost every birthday party, shower, wedding, BBQ, etc. My bridal shower was on LI, but I got married on LI so that was to be expected.
My step-mother has already given me a day for my shower because my sister will be in NY from Arizona for a wedding the first week in June. I don't want anything ridiculous, just something at the house or in the backyard or something.
Yesterday my MIL offered to have it at her house. She lives close to Bridgeport, CT. That is about 45 minutes closer to NY than where I am. So for most people it would take a little over an hour to get there. The Port Jefferson Ferry is also an option for those people who live out East where the drive would be a little longer. I thought it was a great idea because baby stuff can be so big and it would be so much easier for me to get anything I would have to leave there that I couldn't get home.
I called my step-mom and told her that my MIL offered to have it at her house and get a tent, blah, blah, blah. My step-mom says, "Well I just thought we could have it here because that's where most of the people are." I wanted to say, "But that's not where I am!" But of course I didn't say anything.
Don't get me wrong, whatever happens I will be happy. I hate that I even have requests for this shower because I know that I am lucky that people will be throwing me a party where people are giving me gifts.
Would you travel an hour and 15 minutes to go to a shower for someone?
If you made it through this I really do appreciate it. Also any advice that you can give me would be appreciated too. TIA!!

Re: Shower Location Question (A little long...)
I would travel, but that's me. I dont think alot of other people would... I would have it on Long Island, since you say thats where 97% of the guests are from. Good luck!

Re: Shower Location Question (A little long...)
U should do what is easiest for you. However, if u do have it in CT, some people may not come. (I'd be okay w/ that, but u may not be!)
Where would YOU prefer to have the shower?
(ETA: The Port Jeff ferry has gotten so that may not be an option for everyone.)

Re: Shower Location Question (A little long...)
I would travel for family or a close friend. I think other ppl think differently though. KWIM. I get your situation though. We live in DC. All of our family is in NY & NJ. The only family we have down here is BIL & FSIL. So my shower will also be on LI. DH doesn't get it that it is two ppl traveling instead of 100. It is going to be a PIA w/ trucking the stuff back, but it is what it is I guess. Good luck!

Obviously CT would be easier for me, but since I moved here 6 years ago "easier" hasn't always been the option I have chosen.
I don't care where it is, like I said I am thankful that it's even happening. DH wants it to be in CT, but that's because he thinks I go to LI too much. There are months where I am there 3 out of 4 weekends.
As for the ferry, people can walk on that is much cheaper, only about $7 each way. I know the car is $50 and that's with only the driver, it is getting ridiculous. I could always add something in the invite that we could pick people up or whatever. My MIL's house is literally 15 minutes away from the ferry on the CT side.

Re: Shower Location Question (A little long...)
if you are ok with having a small shower & having people not come to CT for various reasons, i would have it there. It would be easier for you, especially with getting gifts back to your house. if you want a bigger turn out, i would make it more convenient for the guests.

Re: Shower Location Question (A little long...)
The baby shower should be where you will be most comfortable getting to.
I would say do it on CT. You're not going to want to lug everything, plus if your DH needs to make a couple of trips with stuff it will be easier.
I've travelled to Westchester from Farmingville (Exit 63 LIE) for a baby shower. Those who want to share this with you will be there

Re: Shower Location Question (A little long...)
I have some family in NY (queens & LI) and some family in PA (aout 2 hours away from Manhattan). We always have the party for whoever it is honoring in THEIR state. Like my shower- NY & My cousin's shower- PA. Everyone travels and we've never had a real issue with ppl not coming because it's too far. Most ppl carpool together.
YOU are pregnant. Ppl should definitely accomodate you.

Re: Shower Location Question (A little long...)
I would travel that far for a shower, but with 97% of the folks on LI - I voted to try and have it there if you can. But if you decide on CT, don't worry - people will still come, they can carpool, etc.

Re: Shower Location Question (A little long...)
It depends on who ur inviting. Close friends and family will travel. However, at my shower, there will be a lot of ladies that are friends w/ the grandmas (they invite each other to these events all the time) and I think most of those women would just rsvp no. Same goes for people who you might invite but aren't that close, like co-workers or friends that are newer- or even old friends that you stay in touch with and invite to events but don't hang out with all the time...
As for the ferry- I wouldn't really consider being picked up by the host or ur ils as an option. I would either drive all the way or put my car on the ferry- but for $50 I would probably b!tch about it (sorry, just being honest, lol). Personally, I hate feeling trapped without my own transportation (or a ride with a good friend) so that I can leave if I really need/want to.

I would presonally travel that far for family or for a good friend. I don't see an hour in the car as a big deal. But that's just me.

I agree. I live in CT too and most of my family and friends live in LI/NYC. I had my shower on LI. It's easier for me to just travel down there than asking everyone else to travel.

I would travel for a close friend or family member.
DH's cousin's shower was Thanksgiving Weekend in Binghamton...I didn't go to that- but that would be 6 hours on a normal day- a holiday wkend was out of the question.

Re: Shower Location Question (A little long...)
Jusat a thought.
Both my cousins live out of state and they both had 2 showers. One on LI and one where they lived.
You could do that.
Are your IL's entire family in CT? If they are, I would have it there. If 97% of all of your guests are on LI....then I would have it on LI.

Me too. My fam & friends are spread out around the tri-state area and I travel for showers way more often than not so I dont see the big deal at all (in fact, I'm headed to Westchester on Sat for a friend's and didnt think twice about it!). I think an hour in the car for a guest is much easier than a pregnant you schlepping all of that baby gear back to CT!

See this is my thing about it. We aren't doing it until June 5th and I am due July 17th. I will be 34 weeks pregnant. Just something else to think about.

I would travel if that was where the guest of honor lived.
I don't think it's fair for you to have to travel on your day.

I agree.....I have traveled farther for showers...if it's someone important to you, people will travel.
You are going to be 34 weeks pregnant, you should have the shower closer to you. There's a lot of stuff to bring back to your house and you want to start setting up the nursery STAT!

Re: Shower Location Question (A little long...)
I probably would because I love taking trips. If it were someone very close, definitely.
But here is the problem-people might think it is too pricey to go or a long way. That may hold people back. But it is hard to say because everyone is different. I might not go that far for someone I wasn't very close with.
BTW-I chose other because you could have two showers! I had a girl I knew who grew up in NJ and her DH in NY-she had a NY shower and a NJ shower-and this was for her wedding! I would invite those who will come to CT to that one and maybe a smaller LI one.
