Shooting at Short Hills mall
So scary. You can't go anywhere these days...
MILLBURN — A person was shot tonight near The Mall at Short Hills, according to two law enforcement sources with knowledge of the situation.
The shooting took place during a carjacking, one of the sources said.
The unidentified victim was taken to Morristown Medical Center, the source said.
The victim's condition was unknown.
Robert Newman, an employee shuttle driver with Country Club Services, said around 8:30 p.m., he heard two shots fired outside the mall, a woman screaming and then saw a green Suburu speed past him.
"The Suburu went out of here at 100 mph," Newman said.
Several police cruisers were seen near Nordstrom's department store. Police lights were seen flashing on the second level of the parking lot closest to the store.
One officer was seen walking with a shotgun.
No panic or immediate sense of alarm was visible outside the mall. The mall was locked down for a short time, but patrons were not evacuated.

Scary. It was breaking news on Channel 7. I hope the person survives.

I swear to god, Im never leaving the house with my children.
That is why I refuse to go to the mall at night during this time of year, and if I do go, its never alone.

Re: Shooting at Short Hills mall
This is so sad. Chanel 7 said the man was 30 years old and shot in the head and his wife was also hurt. Two men stole his 2012 silver range rover. This is such a sad and horrible event. I hope that the man is able to survive and heal.
Short Hills is considered a very high end mall here in NJ. I really try not to go shopping at night.

Re: Shooting at Short Hills mall
This is nuts.
On the FB mom's group for my area, a couple weeks ago someone wrote that she knows someone who was robbed at gunpoint in the Target parking lot in Copiague a few weeks ago.
Granted, this is not the greatest parking lot but this didn't make the news. I'm always vigilant when I go there but now I am no longer going at night.
I opted to go to Stop & Shop yesterday after nightfall and I just brought my wallet and my keys and parked close to the doors. Made sure I scanned the lot before I got out of my car.

He was pronounced dead late last night :(. I read the story when I woke up earlier and went back to bed to hug my husband. Apparently the wife wasn't hurt but was there for the entire incident. So horrible.

That is horrible. Short hills mall is very upscale. You can't go anywhere. I go to the mall by me just to get out of the house and walk around with my 6 month old. It's during the da, but even while I'm there I find myself thinking of exit strategies if gd forbid someone came in with a gun. What a world this has become.

It's very scary and very sad, but you have to keep things in perspective. You are far more likely to be killed getting into your car to drive to said mall than you are to be involved Ina random act of crime.

I'm sure that is very comforting to his wife and family.
I hope they find these animals and they get everything that is coming to them.

God, you can't say anything around here without someone taking it the wrong way. Did you miss the part where I said it was very sad for his family? The only point I'm trying to make is that the rest of us shouldn't live our lives in fear of random acts of violence. That these incidents get a lot of publicity and weigh heavy on our minds, but that in reality, it's unlikely to happen to you and that there are other activites we engage in without a second thought that are more likely to cause harm.
It's a scary thought, my sister lives in NJ and this is the mall she would go to.

This is horrible. I wonder if this car has a GPS where PD can track this car.
Since his wife got into the car hopefully her cell phone is inside her car and PD can get a ping from her cell.

Awful and so scary. The person probably targeted it because it is so upscale.

Shooting at Short Hills mall
The two cold-blooded killers are still on the loose as of Monday morning, authorities said.
Police located Friedland's stolen car, a 2012 silver Range Rover, license plate U26BVD, Monday in a garage in Newark, ABC7 reported.

I really hope they got them on camera. I would like to think there's tons of cameras in those garages.

Shooting at Short Hills mall
The Ranger Rover was found Monday morning behind an abandoned and boarded up house on Renner Avenue in Newark, about 11 miles from where the shooting took place, police said.
The vehicle was removed from the scene on a flatbed truck. The rear windshield was shattered.

I got what you were saying. My father swore he wouldn't let me NEAR airplanes after 9/11 and didn't want me to work in high rise office buildings. None of which would have changed what happened or could happen in the future.
It is very sad what happened but we can't live our lives in fear of going outside.
That poor family.
