Shi-Poo's

Is this even a proper breed - Shi-Poo's??

In any case, 2 of my niece's are dying for a puppy. They have "narrowed it down" to a Shi-Poo. I started to talk to them about rescuing from a shelter as opposed to buying from a store...and buying from a reputable breeder as opposed to a puppy mill.

It's been a while since I've read up on puppy mills - can someone point me in a good direction. Also any info on "designer" breeds would be helpful.

My niece's are 9 & 11...very bright and eager to learn. Chat Icon

TIA!

Re: Shi-Poo's

Here is some info on Designer dogs

The shih-poo is not recognized by AKC or any other national dog groups. The "Hybrid Dog Group" recognizes them, but I'm not sure how much credit to give them.

I grew up w/ a poodle mix. Before "anything-poo" was popular. She was the smartest, most easily trained, lovable dog ever. That being said, anything with a poodle in it's background isn't also "hypo-allergenic". The pup can pick up either breed's characteristics.

I've seen lots of poodle mixes at Little Shelter and other groups on LI. Check pet-finder. They can narrow down by breed. I'm sure there are tons of poodle rescue groups also.

Good luck!!

Re: Shi-Poo's

i think its great youre teaching tehm about mills and byb!

unfortunatly, no reputable breeder would EVER breed a "shi poo"

what is it anyway? shih tzu and poodle?

anyway, so yeah, if thats the dog they have their hearts set on the best bet is petfinder.

BUT im also sure at their age if they were given a purebred poodle or shih tzu theyd be happy!

exciting for them to be getting a puppy though!

i have a "schnoodle" that i adopted from the shelter. i totally agree with the above poster that poodle mixes can be some of the most wonderful dogs EVER! my owen is one of the sweetest, smartest animals i've ever known.

i'm sure that petfinder has tons of poodle mixes up for adoption. good luck!!!

Re: Shi-Poo's

Thanks for the input everyone. Yes, "shi-poos" are a Shih tzu/poodle mix.

My nieces are definitely dreaming - my SIL is allergic to animals - but I still like the idea of educating them. I've spoken to them about vegetarianism and they are always asking me questions. I love it!
