She won't stop jumping!

I love Jersey to death, but she is killing me with the jumping. Se gets SO excited to see people (anyone) that when theycome near her, she jumps up on them & ends up scratching them (me included) We have tried ignoring, like everyone recommends, but then she bites our feet. Any other suggestions? I always feel bad when i have people ove because I don't want her to scratch them. TIA!

Turn your back on the dog. Eventually they will sit & that is when you acknowledge & praise with a "good sit." It takes a while to train this one, but it is worth it.

Also, you can teach a "wait command." Randomly go to the door and tell Jersey to sit, then wait. Go about opening the door and make sure that Jersey stays without moving while you open the door, etc. Once you are ready for Jersey to move again, give a "Good wait" and reward. Do this even when people are not coming in, so that Jersey gets the idea that the door is not a trigger for a jumping fit.

You have to turn your back and ignore her. Casey is 3 yrs old (almost) and she has just now started to "get it". She hardly jumps on me but she does it to my DH all the time - because he doesn't enforce the back turning and the ignoring, but I do. It takes a lot and you have to do it every time. And tell people to do the same thing when they come to your house.

Yes definitely ignore her and turn your back. Don't acknowledge until the dog is calm and/or sitting. Then praise.

and/or you can also put her on a leash everytime someone comes to the door. Then don't let the dog anywhere near the person who comes in. Wait until she's calm and then let her greet the person. See... everytime someone comes in that door... she knows that THAT door is something exciting.

The turning your back on the dog does work. May take time, but it will work.

Thank you for the responses everyone. I've been trying to turn my back and totally ignore her, but like I said, then she bites my feet. It seems to have worked for many of you, so I guess I will just have to keep doing it, it's SO frustrating. Chat Icon

I agree with turning your back to her. Not sure what to do about the ankle-biting......

Re: She won't stop jumping!

Does she know sit? If so don't pet her or anything, just push her away until she sits. Then totally overwhelm her with kisses and hugs. That's how we broke Misty of jumping.

Yes, she's great with sit, lay down., give me paw, but when I turn my back she will sometimes sit & then when i go to say good girl for sitting, she jumps on me!
