SFR: Did anyone on here move from NY to FL?

I'm looking for feedback from parents. I don't want to post this on the home board or NFR b/c my question is family related. We've talked about moving to the Tampa area but have no clue about which school districts are good, which areas are safe, etc. and I don't feel like I have anyone I can ask. My family that's down there is so far removed from having small children that they don't know. Up here on the island I feel like our decisions were all about getting into a good district which we did so I was happy but now that DH has raised the subject of moving I am petrified about where to look. It's a big area and they're a lot of mediocre or even not good schools down there so I feel lost. I'd appreciate any help.

I will try posting on home board too maybe someone on there has some feedback.

My DH (Fiance) and I moved to Florida. It was only temporary due to the fact we missed our family and I got pregnant.

When we were thinking about going we started researching the area. I used sites like findyourspot.com and monstermoving.com to find areas that we may be interested in.

From there we mapped out some places to go look at and we made a trip down there for research only.

We drove around during the AM and PM hours. We looked to see what was near by and what is important (hospital, library, parks, etc).

I don't know anything about the Tampa area except that it is a nice area and very up and coming.

I lived in Florida for 10 months and moved back. I love to go to visit but I cant live there. Especially in the summer. I like the pace and the people here more - even though almost all my family is there.

DH grew up in St. Petersburg and a good part of his family lives there and in Tampa. We were on our way to move there when he got called for the fire department and we decided to try that first and then see what happens.

We still wish that we moved down there, St. Pete is really nice, as is Tampa, we chose job security and a pension. Oh well, I guess we will move when we are 60

ETA: I'd HIGHLY recommend St. Pete, it is a wonderful area. DH's cousins that grew up there went to a wonderful school and are in a ton of activities
