I am interested in taking up sewing - nothing fancy just the basic like hemming clothing, sewing curtains etc.
Does anyone know if there are sewing classes around (nassau or queens)?

Anyone that does sew, can you tell me if it is something you can just play around with and figure it out?

Basic sewing machine recommendations?

DH thinks I am crazy, but I feel like it would be useful

Re: sewing

I have a singer. I forget which exact one. I love it. I just do basic sewing. I taught myself how to use the machine. It's not hard. But I'm not that good. A class might help. But if not, it does come in handy to fix things or make simple things. This is my second machine but I would definitely get one that has the self threading. I'll try to update with my model number later.

ETA: I've had both my sister and sister in law borrow my machine bc they never had one. I told them in like 5 mins how to work it and they both were able to do it. So it is something anyone can play and figure out I think.

Re: sewing

sewing is the best!!!

it is simple enough to pick up the basics on your own. then there's youtube lol

a basic class would be great.

joanns does do classes. then there are classes at local quilt shops. they might be geared towards quilting and buying their stuff, but you might find a good basic class there.

my grandmother was a seamstress, that's how she came to this country. i've lived my whole life with the hum of a sewing machine in the background... but alas, my heart went towards knitting and crocheting.

i currently own 4 vintage singer sewing machines Chat Icon

things you can do with basic sewing skills:

* clothes repair
* clothes alterations
* hems
* curtains
* pillows and pillow cases
* tote bags
* toy clothes
* quilts... they are easier than you think

Sewing is relatively easy nowadays. Modern machines have automatic needle and bobbin threading. It's super easy to find some tutorials on Youtube, and go from there! I love to sew, I make dresses, costumes, pillows, etc. for my DD. I know of sewing classes, but they are only in Suffolk

I really want to learn how to sew also. My grandmother was a seamstress and I kick myself that I never learned from her.

There is a sewing store in Hicksville that does classes on demand. I've been meaning to go in but never follow through. If you call, please let me know if you find out about any classes.

Here is the link to the store.

I took a class at Joann and it helped me get started. I love the Made Everyday youtube videos - easy to follow and easy projects.

thank you all for the encouragement - it is great to hear how easy it is!
Unfortunately the Joanne near me does not have classes, but I am going to look into the store in Hicksville

Jenn79 - i would love if you could give the model number of your machine

And if anyone else has a machine recommendation that would be great

I have a Brother Project Runway machine. Has a bunch of digital stitches. I bought it at Walmart.com years ago. Love it!

I bought a super basic machine because I had no idea if I would actually use it and I regret it - now I just want another one that does more!
