sewer pipe
Does anyone have theirs drained regularly? My friend had a back up and now I am getting nervous! I have never had it done! I didn't even know there was such a thing! I thought it was just for cesspools but aparently not!

most sewer lines within the walls of your house should normally be rather empty except for the traps.... each fixture should have a trap as well as the main sewer line right before it leaves your house....
we have ours cleaned regularly (maybe once a year) to avoid roots or debris from blocking it...
EDT: the purpose of the trap is actually to keep water.... it sits in the U shaped pipe to prevent sewer gases from escaping through fixtures.

UPDATE: we actually have it done about every six months...generally around $100-125....
they clean out the main sewer line in the basement, which runs the full length of the house out into the street....
we use a local company, but i have family that uses Roto-Rooter... roughly the same price.
