Serious Child Safety Information
Recently, a neighbor alerted us of a pedophile that moved literally around the corner from our home. I live at the end of Franklin Square where it borders Garden City and Stewart Manor.
THis was so upsetting to myself and husband.The neighbors are all upset as well. There are so many children living in the surrounding blocks.
I called the town of hempstaed and was told to call the local precinct. The local precinct was no help as well.
I WAS NOT alerted by mail or any other communication of this pedophile moving in my area. ISnt there a law? Any advice of how to get rid of him?

I don't live near you, but I would be VERY upset about this as well. I think Meghan's Law is the law where they have to let you know when a pedophile moves into your town.
I know a lot of people may disagree with me, but I feel that these people CANNOT be rehabilitated and are such a danger to children. They should be locked up for life or given the death penalty, IMHO.
eta: I just looked it up and 3 predators live in my town!  Thank God, they are all 3+ miles from my house, but still I am freaked! The site is great because It tells you what kind of car (make and model) they drive and show the predator’s picture.

There was a discussion on the FHF board about this a little while ago. I would be upset too.
I do think you need to look at it as this is a guy you know about. Every neighbor will be looking after everyone's children, you will be teaching your children about the stranger issue with a heightened sense of reality. I believe that there are more sick people like this out there in our neighborhoods - they just haven't been caught yet.

Great advice. I work at the Coalition Against Child Abuse and Neglect and it is sick some of the stuff I see. Everyone knows where this guys is, and so do he cops.
It is a good reminder of what we need to teach our kids to be safe. You also have to be concerened about those preditors that haven't been caught. Also, it is a know fact that 93% of victims know their attacker/assaliant. You just have to keep enforcing with your kids how they should be treated. it is a sick world

We've gotten some notices about it in our neighborhood -- and it is So scary. I'd like to think that they've served their time and won't ever do it again, but I don't know how many times that actually happens. I just know that I will have to keep a close eye on my child. We used to wander and play in the streets when I was growing up and I do want her to have plenty of outdoor playing time -- but it is sad that our world is so different now!

I don't believe our world is different now. I believe there were always people out there like this and I was just one of the lucky ones.
There was a tv show awhile back on how most molestations take place. It's the adult that befriends the child that you need to worry about more than anyone else.

I know in most descussions im younger then most the mothers on here but I think that these people were always out there. I used to be one who when i was younger id go play and my mom would tel me to come check in at the kitchen window every hour and I had no fear as to what could happen but now I am so nervous with my own child. I check the sex offender registry monthly and I study there faces.But I am going back to school to eventually become a nypd cop and I know what is out there.
plus my dh bestfriend was just put in jail for statutory rape for 3 months and even he has to register he was 20 and she was 16 when it happened he was a student teacher and she was a student and at 25 he was arrested for it.

I believe the law states that anybody living within a certain radius of the offender has to be notified of their presence. I believe it does not notify you of their address -- just that they have moved into your neighborhood. I remember getting one of these notices in the mail at my old house and that is all it told us.
There is no way to "get rid" of them. You just have to be aware that they are there. I think the best thing we can do is to frequently check the website and kind of do our own "defensive driving" to protect ourselves and our children from known offenders.
