Senate sends $634 billion spending bill to Bush to sign
 
WASHINGTON - Automakers gained $25 billion in taxpayer-subsidized loans and oil companies won elimination of a long-standing ban on drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as the Senate passed a sprawling spending bill Saturday.
The 78-12 vote sent the $634 billion measure to President Bush, who was expected to sign it even though it spends more money and contains more pet projects than he would have liked.

yes - this is the normal budget they pass every year.
so now add $700B
grand total = $1.4 trillion

Now this pizzes me off. I don't mind being taxed extras but expect it to be used for crucial measures... eg; clearing up this mess and then the deficit.

I'm pretty sure that the $25B for automakers is part of the 2005 Highway Initiative. So it's not new, just crummy timing.

the auto industry thing really p!sses me off...
those b@stards purposefully marketed huger and huger SUVs to the public... despite the increase in world demand for petroleum. I can't HELP but think that they were in bed with oil companies with this....
they also profited immensely at the time.... becuase the SUVs were categorized not as passenger vehicles (with many safety regulations and therefore manufacturing expense) but rather small trucks. so they marketed the large size as being 'safer' but at the time, they were very rigid, with high centers of gravity, and were much less safe than the average passenger car. but the profit margin was HUGE......
So, that was detroit's golden era. Will the tax payers see any of THAT money? of course not.
but the fact that they have invested almost nothing in fuel efficient vehicles over the last couple decades (24 mpg is fuel efficient  ) puts our entire nation in a compromising position with our demand for fuel.
the final nail in the coffin is their embrace of biofuels (Which require as much petroleum to produce as it replaces).
I want to see those companies SUFFER  . They contributed significantly to our fuel problem and dependence upon the mid-east.
