People do it all the time. For large items, it's so much easier for the seller and the buyer saves big time on shipping costs. It's no different than putting in the paper and having someone come over except that if they purchase it through ebay, you already have the payment and they can't say they dont want it when they come to get it. You could meet the person somewhere if you feel better doing that than giving them your address. Or you could leave it outside for them.

I have done pick ups and my SIL does them also from Ebay. It's totally safe...make sure your DH is home or someone else is at hoome with you. Arrange for pick up when it's convenient for you and do it during daytime hours.
I'd edit your auction saying that pick up is an option and state where in NY you are...you might get more bids that way.

Check their rating. If they are brand new, i would question it. See what their rating# is next to their name. Also, what you can do is click on the number and check his feedbacks. You can click on the the items that he has recently purchased to get an idea of the person (sorry, but yea - i do this). if he has bought a lot of "child" related things, he probably needs it for his kid. If he has weird stuff on it - scratch the idea and don't let him pick up at your house.
