Selling gold question...

I have some pieces that have diamonds and/or other precious or semi-precious stones in them. Do they count them separately? Did you not sell pieces like this?

Thanks! Chat Icon

I believe you can ask them to remove the stones for you.

I read in other selling gold threads that the stones are removed and then the setting is weighed.

Mine was weighed with the stones in. I have no idea if anything was deducted for the weight but they told me you don't get anything extra for it. Mine only had small stones like pave. I think if the stones were bigger, they could remove them for you.

If you don't mind me asking - where did you go?

Same. I just had some small stones, I didn't bother to ask them for them. I went to Budget Buy & Sell in Patchogue.

Re: Selling gold question...

Thanks everyone. I didn't bring the stuff with the stones with me...

I'm wondering if I got ripped off, actually...

I had under 5oz of gold. Just under, I believe. Some 14kt, some 10kt (they didn't distiguish between them). They gave me $900.

Does that sound about right?

I just did a search on myself because I didn’t remember exactly – this was my calculation I did when I sold mine:

I weighed it before I went and it was about 4.2 oz, which is about 3.8 troy ounces.

Gold is trading at (approx) $915 for 1 troy ounce of pure (24K) gold. 14K gold is approx 58.33% of 24K gold.

So I figured the value of my gold was about $2028 and they gave me $1200. So I felt I got a good deal, and if my math or thinking are incorrect (for any commodities traders) don’t tell me, let me think I got a good deal… Chat Icon

Not sure what gold is selling for today, I sold mine in May.

ETA - they did take out the 10K gold and weigh it separately, but I only had 2 small pieces that were 10K
