Sealers for children's teeth
While at the dentist today he noted a crevasse like indentation in my daughters lower back tooth and insisted she needed a "sealer " as it would be very difficult to ever clean. Wondering if I agreed too quickly as now that I'm home I've seen concern about BPA in them

Sealers for children's teeth
I had sealers put on my teeth back in the 80s and I am sure there is stuff in the material since it was so long ago. I'm still kicking.
The seals have saved my teeth from cavities. I would have had it done and never even thought 2x about it.

Sealers for children's teeth
I have the worst dental problems due to a car accident that effected all of my teeth. I would do anything if it prevents her dental problems later

Re: Sealers for children's teeth
YES!!! I opted out of a sealer, which turned into a cavity and waiting to long to get filled for my DS who is 7. It was on a baby tooth. Well, he ended up getting an abscess on the gum right outside the tooth. He was in a lot of pain, needed antibiotics and needed to get that tooth pulled by an oral surgeon. Since he is a nervous patient they needed to sedate him. Next month he is getting a spacer made where that tooth was because, it generally falls out around 10 or so.
I will never wait again. Also, by not filling in the baby tooth, the cavity can also affect the adult teeth because the baby root is so small.

Re: Sealers for children's teeth
3 times I read the title of this post and 3 times I read it as "sellers for children's teeth".
As for "sealers"...I had it done on my daughter when she was little. She had her 1st cavity at 25 when she was pregnant. She was so upset over it. The dentist told her it's totally normal.
I think it helped her a lot.

Re: Sealers for children's teeth
When I read about BPA and how the sealer releases flouride and the controversy surrounding it I secoond guessed my decision.
Seems like her indent/crevasse will deepen over ime though and getting worse would be a bigger issue
thank you

Sealers for children's teeth
My DS had 7 cavities before he hit 5, so when the dentist asked if I wanted to seal the back teeth, I said "absolutely".

I also worry about the whole fluoride releasing aspect of it due to the controversy surrounding fluoride

Re: Sealers for children's teeth
Just want to add- most sealants are NOT BPA-FREE. There are brands that are BPA free so ask your Dentist to show you the material. I personally refused sealants for myself (yes, adults get them too) bc they were not BPA free. I am a Dental Hygienist by the way. Not to scare anyone. It's all your personal preference and opinion on the issue of BPA. I personally avoid it but you may not be as psycho as me. lol

If BPA is a big concern for you, talk to your dentist first to see if he used the type without BPA. We have many parents asking about this so you wouldn't be out of line. I know the company Ultradent has a BPA free material. Sealants are the best preventative method for cavities so I wouldn't recommend not getting them for your LO. Just make sure you know what's in the material your office uses bc everyone uses different stuff.

I had sealants put on as a Kid and didn't have a cavity until college. I would get them for my kids, although now I may specifically ask for the bpa free ones.

Re: Sealers for children's teeth
I've had a few sealants put on my teeth to prevent cavities and they work like magic. Wasn't concerned about BPA at all. I think the benefits outweigh the tiny amount of BPA and I believe that these days the make BPA-free sealants. I have horrible teeth since childhood and Im obsessed with my kids' teeth. But if they ever needed sealants, I would totally go for them.
