Screen Time/Video Games for Kindergartner

My son just started school - I'm wondering what others do for screen time or more specifically video games? DH has the old Super Mario game and while I don't mind it so much (not as violent as some other games now) I want to limit it. He wanted to play today before school but I said no - that we can't play video games BEFORE school. I was thinking 15 minutes after school, or just weekends? What do others do? Do you have rules?

All electronics get lumped into one rule, as long as your HW is done, chores are done and anything else I ask you to do is done, you are free to use them.

This.
DD is 5 - she is not into video games like Nintendo or Xbox or anything but she likes playing game apps on the tablet- like dress up a princess, make cupcakes, do nails, etc

She can use it as much as she wants as long as homework is done (we have had barely any homework so far though)

I don't limit electronics or TV

I don't really limit anything with my DD, she is almost 7. Honestly, she's pretty good about about limiting herself, she'll play for a while then move on to other things, she's not the type of kid to sit on an iPad or gaming system for hours and hours. As long as her HW and chores are done I don't really stress about how much she's playing on electronics. If it became REALLY excessive I would probably set some limits but since it's not I don't sweat it.

Re: Screen Time/Video Games for Kindergartner

my son is 7 and we've always limited screen time. He is that kid that could sit for hours and hours playing the ipad, wii or otherwise.

We don't really let him use them during the week with school and all. He gets about an hour each day on saturday and sunday.

*we also limit what he plays. No violent games at all.

no video games on school nights - that's the house rule. I will occasionally break it and tell him because he did so well on his homework or a project or whatever, that he can play tonight - but that's not the norm.

the iPads and TV I allow as long as homework and reading is done.

Re: Screen Time/Video Games for Kindergartner

No iPads on weekdays, and TV only goes on at night after everything is done - so basically about a half hour to an hour before bed. My kids get like zombies on their iPads and I can't stand it, so during the school year I lay down the law. I'm less strict with the TV because at least we all have to share it so it's still a group activity, somewhat. The iPads isolate them in their own worlds. My kids are 5 and 7.

Re: Screen Time/Video Games for Kindergartner

My dd just started K this year and I don't really limit screen time. She just doesn't have a lot of time to watch tv now. She has anywhere from an 1-1 1/2 a day I would guess. As long as all of hw is done and she eats well for dinner I don't mind her playing on the ipad or watching tv before her bath.
