School absences
Someone was telling me that today, if a student misses over 7 unexcused (by doctors notes) days of school, the school is required to call CPS..... Is this true???? It is considered educational neglect or something. Anyone heard of this? I don't have school aged kids but this really shocked me! I was always out from school! Boy times have changed! My parents use to take us out for vacation all the time

Definitely not 7. I had a student miss 40 days and all they got was a strongly worded letter.

Re: School absences
No,,in order for there to be educational neglect, the absences have to be so severe that there are other significant effects as well (consistently failing grades, social-emotional impact, etc.). And even then, cps often does not take the case, or they call in another unit (FAR) that works more proactively and therapeutically with families.

Ok...I find it so hard to believe. That's less than 1 day a month. But the person who told me works in a school and were so adamant about it. Said it was a new law this year...

Re: School absences
My DD had probably 16-18 absences last school year between vacations and sickness. The school never said anything and nobody called CPS. Whoever told you that is mistaken.

If that were true they would have to increase the size of CPS by about 1000%. Kids take vacations and get sick all the time. 7 absences is not alot at all. Chronic absences would be reported to the district but unless it was coupled with something else that was serious, I doubt CPS would ever be called.

You have to look at the Districts attendance policy. Every district is different

Re: School absences
In my kids district, if you have 7 unexcused absences they will consider it neglect, and I'm not sure what happens from that point, if cps is called or sheriffs department. But if you bring in a doctors note that is considered an excused absence, so doesn't count. We also have to get approval for any vacation absences.
