scared of SIDS..
Does anyone know a way to get a SIDS monitor for your baby through the doctor? My friend got one for her DD but she said it was because she was a SIDS baby herself. I would like to know where to get a monitor if the dr. won't provide one. Any suggestions? Thanks!

SIDS means Sudden Infant Death Syndrome....how could your friend be a SIDS baby if she is still alive? Can you have SIDS and live?
I never heard of a SIDS monitor.

Re: scared of SIDS..
i figured someone would ask this.. lol.. her heart did actually stop and her dad performed cpr on her and brought her back to life.. if it wasnt for him, she would have died.
Her baby had this monitor on 24/7 for about 7 months or so.. maybe a little longer just in case and it would be hidden under her clothes.. and if her heart stopped it was an alarm type of thing that would go off letting you know.

Re: scared of SIDS..
Ooooh......thanks for explaining
Never even knew SIDS monitors existed. Sounds like her DD was probably just hooked up to infant heart monitor. And I'm surprised they would even do that unless they had reason to believe there may be complications with her heart.
I don't think SIDS is hereditary, hence the word "sudden" in the name. I don't think doctors have been able to find a reason or medical link that causes SIDS.

Re: scared of SIDS..
Actually, just looked it up...here's what I found:
SIDS is the sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history.
And here is a link explaining things to do to prevent SIDS.

Re: scared of SIDS..
i remember talking about SIDS in my psychology class a few semesters back and my teacher was a dr. too and he said it is possibly believed that SIDS is actually sleep apnea (spelling??) in infants! Not sure what is actually true though.. but still SIDS is real and its scary!

Re: scared of SIDS..
I think SIDS is when the baby forgets to breathe. I was watching "Taking Baby Home" and they had triplet premies that had a breathing monitor that would alert the parents if one of the babies stopped breathing. Low and behold in the middle of the interview the alarm rings and the poor parents had to run over and move the baby around to make sure he started breathing again. It looked very scary. I think to get that kind of device however you probably need to have a high risk baby?

Re: scared of SIDS..
Try the Angel Care Monitor. It goes under the mattress and an alarm will sound if it doesnt detect movement for 20 seconds. I bought it because DS was a belly sleeper

Re: scared of SIDS..
Keep in mind that those monitors cause more worry than necessary in many cases.
They are known to go off often and most of the time falsely...can you imagine sleeping and being woken up all night by a faulty alarm??
Yes, there is a lot of worry that goes along with being a parent....but take proper precautions (on the back to sleep until baby rolls over), use a sleep sack etc...you are going to make yourself crazy with worry!

i should have explained it in the original first posting lol.. but i too looked at my friend when she was telling me and had a puzzled look and then she went into detail..if her dad wasnt there to revive her, she would have not lived.. so scary!
