Scan It- in a supermarket- question
I dont understand though how this really works. I feel like people are going to just put things in the bag without scanning it...no?
I am an honest person, but I feel like this could tempt some people! I am nuts for thinking this?

Re: Scan It- in a supermarket- question
nope. i feel this way as well. i have used this feature twice. how easy would it be even to innocently forget to scan something and throw it into the cart/bag, let alone do it on purpose!

Re: Scan It- in a supermarket- question
Its a luck of the draw, the randomly select people to check, so they hope the fear that it could be you is enough to deter people and I truly believe that most people are honest.

Re: Scan It- in a supermarket- question
I've used it a bunch of times and was only checked once. Even then, they only spot checked about 5 items from my bags.
Unfortunately, some people are less honest then others but I would guess it pays off even if they lose out with some items. I know I go out of may way to shop at the store that has it sometimes. I think of it as a calculated risk, they'll gain more business which more than makes up for a few items that go unpaid for.

Re: Scan It- in a supermarket- question
I use this all the time. I actually couldn't tell you the last time I went through a check out with a person!
They check every 14th person that goes through (that's what the told me at the store). It's luck of the draw I guess. You never know if it's going to be your cart or not. I am sure that people get out without paying for things, but when they do choose your cart to "audit" they do a pretty thorough job of making sure you scanned things.

The Stop & Shop by me has this and it's the greatest invention EVER! I was so bummed on Monday when I went and the system was down.

Re: Scan It- in a supermarket- question
I'm sure the people who invented this system and the stores who use the system have already thought of this a long time ago. Either they have built in some sort of anti-theft measure which the customer isn't aware of or they have done their math and figured out that the cost savings plus the increased purchases (people will naturally buy more things, the easier you make it for them to buy) will offset any losses due to theft. People shoplift already and a lot of the larger supermarket chains have an eye in the sky watching out for suspected shoplifters.

Re: Scan It- in a supermarket- question
We have this here also, I think they figure that the cost savings that they have by not employing someone to check you out is worth the risk of you not scanning everything. ie, its cheaper for someone to shoplift a few items than it is to hire another cashier.

Re: Scan It- in a supermarket- question
I use it all the time now. I haven't been checked once.
There have been times I put something in my bag and forgot to scan it- luckily I realized right away and took it back out to scan it! It can be very easy to forget! DH also almost did it once.

Re: Scan It- in a supermarket- question
I use the self-checkout at Home Depot all the time. The same potential issues are there as well.
Then again, it's not that hard to have stuff on the bottom shelf of the wagon, and not have the cashier see it. I know they are supposed to look, but they don't always.
There's always an opportunity to "appropriate" goods from a store, either intentionally or by accident, but as mentioned above, I'm sure the stores have calculated the cost of theft vs cost of more cashiers.

LOVE my self-scanner at StopnShop!!
I pick up my groceries, scan put it in my bag and only had to touch it again when I go to put them away. so many steps saved and Im in and out of the market fairly quickly

Re: Scan It- in a supermarket- question
I do love the self scanner at Stop N Shop too, it makes it so easy to get out. Also, I'm a nut about how everything is bagged, so I don't have to address that this with the cashier either.

I had the same thought about how they monitor for stealing. I assumed they randomly audit people's carts. I think I'll ask them the next time I go!

Re: Scan It- in a supermarket- question
I've used it several times and never been checked. I guess it would be easy to cheat the system, but then again self check-out is easy enough to trick, too. Personally, I love both the scan-while-you-shop and the self checkout. What a time saver!

I HATE when it's down! I don't want to shop the old way anymore!
I've been checked a number of times...always scared to death that i put something in my bag without scanning it accidentally.
Stop and Shop might actually make money off of me....my 4 yr old usually holds the scanner as he sits in the cart....one day he is going to scan something on a shelf and i won't even know it.
