Scan for Down's

Not PG (well not anymore Chat Icon ) but my sister is and was due at the same time I was, which is a feat in itself for me. But anyways, this post isn't a pity party (I've had enough pity parties).

She had the NT scan. She is 38 and is 12 weeks. Her results were 5 in 200. The measurement was 2.5. From what I understand, they do additional testing when it is 2.5 and above. They have done an additional blood test, which I believe checks the hCG.

I have been doing reading and it is all so confusing. I know a lot of girls on here have worried about this very thing, so I figured I could get advice that I could understand on here.

I don't know is 5 in 200 high? She is going to do an amnio.

Re: Scan for Down's

Nuchal translucency normally increases with gestational age...the larger the crown-rump length the larger the NT.

Average measurement at 11 weeks is closer to 1 where as at 13 weeks 6 days it's closer to 2...(again that is the median average there is a range)

What one must truly understand is that while the doctors/science recognize that an increase in NT is indicative of a chromosomal abnormalities they dont really fully understand why this is the case..so that leaves room for a margin of error...

At 35 your chances of having a baby with Down Syndrome is 1 in 350...by 40 your chances increase to 1 in 100...

Are you sure her chances are 5 in 200? That sounds a bit odd. Are you sure it's not 1 in 200. Which is about what it would be based on her age. From my understanding they wouldnt have given her odds of 5 in 200 the odds would have been 1 in 40....

I think maybe she does - they don't usually report the first number as anything but 1.

Hope you're well Chat Icon
