Savings bond related - would it make sense to....
Cash out dd's savings bonds and deposit them into her 529 plan or would you keep them as is and let her spend them as she wishes when she is older....we have about 2,000 worth of bonds
TIA

are they 2k now? or in 10+ years will they be 2k? If they are 2K now sure 529, if they are not worth 2k yet I would wait.

well- I am never a fan of keeping all the eggs in one basket we have the same amount in bonds and are keeping them- and then putting money in 529 and then some in regular savings acct.

7 years? I think after that time you can get the value of what person paid for it, my DH's took 18 years to get the full amount

hmmm, I read somewhere that after 1 year, you can cash them and get the value that the person paid, plus minimal interest. so confusing. I think I can look online and type in the serial number and it will give me the value and the maturity date. Thanks

The full amount is what takes 7 years I thought? You can cash them in immediately to receive what the purchaser paid for it (i.e. $25 for a $50 bond). Here is a calculator to see how much they are worth

Hmm, interesting. I was told they used to be 10 year maturity dates, now they are 18 year bonds to recieve full value of the bond.
I'm def going to go look at my DD's bonds, and I know DH still has some bonds he can't cash from his high school graduation that are 18year ones.

To mature, it depends on when the bond was issued.
To stop paying interest, it is 30 years.

Re: Savings bond related - would it make sense to....
You can cash them out, but I would invest them in something other than a 529 plan.
