San Francisco/Napa Valley

I am looking into planning a week in CA this February but I need some suggestions since I am clueless. For those of you who have been to CA/San Fran/Napa/Sonoma, what makes more sense?

-staying 3/4 nights in San Fran (Union Square) and driving to Napa for 3 nights
or
-staying in San Fran the whole time, renting a car and taking day trips for a week (ie Sausalito, Napa, etc.)

Any hotels/suggestions are appreciated!

TIA

Re: San Francisco/Napa Valley

I don't know if I would spend 3 nights in Napa, unless you are planning on doing spa treatments in nearby Calistoga or something like that. The wineries are great, but there is a lot more to do and see in the city.

What I would do is rent a car for a couple of days. On the way to Napa or Sonoma, stop and see Sausalito and Muir Woods. Go to wine country, spend the night, see the wineries the next day. If you feel like you want to see many of the wineries, stay a second day. I think that would be a good first trip.

I wrote a long post about things to do in SF. I will see if I can find it and bump it up for you. If you are staying in Union Square, I wouldn't get a car. Parking on the street will be a pain in the a$$ at best and more likely close to impossible. Parking in the hotel garages is $$$. There used to be a rental car place right in/near Union Square (Enterprise, maybe?)
