SAHM looking to get back into work field.... where to start?
I was wondering if someone could offer some guidance? I am currently a SAHM with a Master's In Early Education plus 12 credits, and have never taught before. I've only had a provisional license which expired many moons ago so I'm not really sure what is out there for me or what other classes I would need to get up to speed. Some people suggested I apply for paraprofessional positions first, I was thinking of maybe working in a Catholic School? I just don't know which way to turn since I have been out of the loop for so long. I would mostly be working to earn extra money for the family, and have holidays/vacations off with my three kids.
Suggestions?

I think looking in Catholic schools as wel as preschools is a good start. Also, check out Huntington Learning Center.

If you're not opposed to it, you can look into subbing. I just started teaching again part time and it's rough when one of your kids is sick. Subbing would offer you the opportunity to make some extra money but if one of your kids is sick you can just stay home with them. Just something to think about.

Also look into agencies that help children and adults with disabilities.
A lot of them have positions that are similar to teaching.
I run a day program for adults and give them basic math, reading and writing exercises as well as higher level daily living skills stuff for several of my groups. (I.e. Budgeting, telling time, following a schedule, planning and following a basic recipe, understanding sales circulars and coupons, basic computer skills, etc.)
There are also positions like Independent Living Skills trainer where you can go into the home for a set amount of hours to work on all kinds of skills.
Since they are usually not FT roles, you can set your schedule and work as much or as little as you want.
It's also a lot of fun because it allows for much more creative kinds of work.
If you want me to send you a list of agencies frequently hiring, FM me.

Thanks. I actually used to do case management so I'm familiar with agencies on LI. I definitely don't want to drive all over the Island like I used to.

Re: SAHM looking to get back into work field.... where to start?
I hear ya on that one....main reason I got out of that too.
But, the positions I describe are not like case management.
You are pretty much meeting with the client at their home and can specify areas you will work.
I also have a "no driving clients in my car" policy too so you can specify that as well.
Personally I also think that makes them less independent when there is transportation available and it's an inappropriate use of Medicaid services ;).
