safety swim?

Has anyone sent their little one for lessons at Safety swim? DD is just about 7 months old and my MIL is pushing me to send her. What are your thoughts...any feedback?

Re: safety swim?

I've been going for the past couple of weeks. I think it's good to go and then learn what to do to teach them. Then I think I'd wait until the summer is over to continue the lessons.

Why will you wait until after summer is over?Just curious?
How do the lessons work? Do you get in the pool with the baby?

I would start now and continue long after summer is over. The instruction the children get is fantastic and it will show you what to reinforce in the pool at home.

If you have private lessons you hand your child over to the instructor, you go into a dark room with glass where you can see out but baby can not see in and you watch your child learning kicks, technique and how to save themselves if they ever fell in the water. After the lesson is over you have 1/2 hour "play" time sort of like a reward for the child in the pool with them.

Josh has been going for the last few weeks. It takes some adjusting being with the instructor but he LOVES the time after his lesson that we spend with him. DH and I switch weeks so we all get the experience. So far Im happy with it and would totally reccomend going to SS.

I would wait b/c I want to use what i've learned there in my own pool. Plus I save some $$$. I chose the Mommy and me lessons and my husband and I take turns bringing the baby in the water. I would say that it's just OK not incredible. Sometimes the instructors are annoying. JMO. Gets the baby used to the water though. You can have the instructor work one on one with the baby but I would do that when they get older.

Re: safety swim?

I go to the Deer Park location for the "Mommy and Me Down Under" class. I think it's great. DD will be 8 months next week.

The class is great. We sing a song as we wet the kids hair, then practice kicks, strokes, holding onto to a flotation device, floating on their backs, getting out of the pool, and have the option of doing a submersion. Then we put swimmies on them and play for a little while. Songs like "Row row row your boat" and "wheels on the bus" are sung when we practice strokes. At the end we sing if you're "happy and you know it". There are 5 kids in the class I go to and we have a GREAT instructor.

We signed up for 6 weeks and will be signing up for 6 more. Then we will continue to practice what we learned this summer in pools and at the beach. I'll start up again with classes again in the fall and stop when it gets cold so I don't have to take her out from the pool into the cold air. I think we'll continue the mommy and me classes until she can take regular swimming lessons.

ETA: I get quite a leg workout moving around the pool with her. I thought I was going to fall down after the first class.
