S/O regarding Car seats - kids of the 70's: How many of you remember...
Rolling around the back of a station wagon when you were 2 & 3?  No matter how tall you were, OR how much you weighed....

we were just talking about this the other day - my brother was born in 83 & he never had a car seat but now kids need to be in a booster til they are 12?

So funny!!!
I think about this stuff all the time.
There was 5 kids in my family and we used to pile in with all of us & our friends. It looked like a clown car - LOL
The best is "DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN A CRIB", meanwhile......I have pictures of me as a baby and my crib was filled with stuffed animals & toys, blankets, you name it.
This is why us Mom's go nuts

I was born in '75...........my mom said she literally took me home cradled in her arms. There were no carseat laws, you just held your baby in the car with you. How insane is that???? 
When I was little my mom and aunt would stuff all 5 of us kids in the backseat and my sister and cousin would share a seatbelt across their lap.

I remember my cousins and I were in the backseat of the car while my grandpa was driving. I was 2, they were 3 and 4. We were unbuckled, jumping up and down in the back. My grandpa kept yelling at us to stop, and swiping his arm back to try to hit us, swerving around the road

I always wanted a cool station wagon, instead we had a huge black Jeep pickup that we used to ride in. Stunk when we drove up to the White mountains, we'd go through sunshowers in the back of a pickup. Talk about feeling like razors slicing your face LOL
We're lucky we didn't get killed.

Only my sister and I. My 2nd sister was born in 1980 and they had a bassinet made for car with a net on to of it so baby would fly out. Then she had a carseat.
As a kid, yeah, we just hopped into the backseat. My parents enforced the seatbelt though even if it was not mandory yet at the time.

I was born in 75- I actually had a car seat - BUT I think it might have been in the front seat and it certainly wasn't rear facing. My parents were always strict on car seat belts etc.

I was born in 1968 and remember sitting on my dad's lap when he was driving!
I also remember being in my Aunt's car when I was a teenager and she was babysitting her grandson and I had to sit in the back of her car because the baby was in a carseat in the front seat.

its too funny. I was chatting with my mom about my friend who is now expecting #3 and has to look for a bigger car, and my mom says "why". And I said because all 3 kids are still in carseats. My mom reminded me of when we went to disney (drove down) I was 6, sister was 4 and brother was 2, and only my 2 year old brother was in a carseat.....

I don't remember, I'd have to ask my dad. My MIL put her kids in boxes - there were 7 of them and they were born between 1961-1973. Though I think DHs younger sister (born 1973) might have been the only one in a carseat.

I was born in the early 70's and my parents told me they had this for me. I call it the death trap and give my dad such a hard time about it now.
I can remember standing on the front seat too, with my mom driving and telling me to sit down or I was gonna get hurt if she had to stop short. And she did, and I did.
We also used to drive home from the ocean sometmes with the back of the station wagon open and our legs dangling out. It was only a 5 minute ride on back roads so not like a highway or anything, but still...

I remember my mom letting me sit in the front while she drove. I would sit in the passenger seat on my KNEES so i could see out the window!vno seat belt btw

Seriously, we learn from the past. Asbestos? Bad. Lead paint? Bad. Original EZ bake oven? Bad.
Front seats aren't inherently dangerous, they're just not AS safe as the back seat. The thing that makes a front seat UNsafe is airbags.
My mom had a car seat for me. I have a pic of me in it. I swear there is no harness system. I think it was simply a place to keep the kid from crawling on the floor lol

Heck yes! There were 6 of us. 3 sat in the middle seat and the 3 unlucky ones (or lucky ones depending on how you look at it), got to go in the "way back", where it was fun to lie flat and roll whenever the car made a turn.

I remember sitting in the front in the middle like where the arm rest is and sometimes ON the arm rest! I was a tiny little girl yup, that sure was safe but with a full car what are your other options?
