asics gel kayano (sp?) and adidas supernova control are my personal favorites, but i overpronate and have knee problems!
you should go to runner's edge in farmindale for a pair. the people there watch you walk barefoot and talk to you about your running. then they show you shoes that would be best for ou.

I don't run, but I also love Asics for the gym. SO comfortable and give amazing support

personally, i can only run in nike and new balance, all other brands feel weird to me.

i love sauconys, but i don't think there is one universal "best." it really depends on your foot and how you run.
second wind is another great store where they will help you find the shoe best for you --- look at the wear pattern on your regular shoes, watch you run, etc...it is on 25a in setauket.
