Runners... Cramps???

I'm really trying guys!

This morning I was running, and by mile 1.5 I got the worst cramp EVER, and had to stop. I've tried everything. Not drinking before, drinking before, drinking during, not eating, etc..

What's the deal? How do I stop these cramps? They are messing up my runs!!!

Re: Runners... Cramps???

I know if I eat or drink before I run, I get cramps but you said you have tried that and it didn't work. Hmmm, maybe it's your breathing? I always breathe in through the nose out through the mouth. I remember years ago my track coach stressing about our breathing so much because of cramps. Also, when you get a cramp, I have found that slowing down a bit and taking smaller steps in between strides really helps get rid of them. HTH!

Is it a side stitch? I used to get those a lot and found that stretching that area helped it before heading out.

Both really good ideas. I will try stretching that area tomorrow, and I will definitely focus on my breathing. I'm sure it's a side stich, I just didn't know what it was called.

Thanks girls!

Re: Runners... Cramps???

I got these when I first started running. What worked for me was to stop and walk, breathing out hard when the foot on the opposite side of the cramp hit the ground. Sometimes it helped to press really hard on the cramped area at the same time.

I've also heard that adding more potassium to your diet can help with these (bananas are great). Another prevention method is to start out really really slow and gradually increase your speed.

Lastly they went away after I'd been running a few months and had gotten used to it.

Re: Runners... Cramps???

If it is a side stitch, I seem to remember my hs track coach saying the same thing about your breathing. If you can regulate your breathing ad push through it, that usually works for me (I got one tonight!). If you can't, then I think there's no shame in walking for a bit!
