Runners, a breathing question

I'm doing the couch to 5k program, and this is really the first time that I've tried to run longer than 1 mile in a long long time (since HS, and even then I wasn't a good runner). My issue is that I get winded so quickly.

What is the best breathing pattern to use? Sometimes I feel like I can't fill my lungs with enough air and I worry about getting too out of breath later on in the run. I know it is in through the nose out through the mouth. But do you inhale for 2 counts, exhale for 2? Or is it 3?

What have you found useful to regulate your breathing?

not sure if it's the correct way or not but it works for me, I breath in and out of my mouth and occasionally in through my nose out my mouth.

No idea if this is the "right" way, but I usually start out by breathing in and out for a count of 4 (when I am warming up) and then as I speed up/get more into the run I move to breathing in and out for a count of 2. But by then Im not counting, it comes naturally.

Yes, I notice my breathing comes easier later, even though that is when I'm more tired. It's the beginning that is the hardest.

you should not be breathing in just through your nose. Ideally you should breath in through both your mouth and your nose, but if you can't do that mouth is better than nose - you get more air by breathing through your mouth than your nose.

as for counts. an easy run should be 3 steps in and 3 steps out. When you kick it up, I think, it should be 2 in and 2 out and when doing intervals, I think it's 2/1. I will say that I have trouble counting my breaths after 3/3

ETA: link -- you only get 27-40% of your oxygen fill breathing just through your nose.

Re: Runners, a breathing question

You may want to start out at a pace where you CAN breathe well, build up your capacity, and then start adding some speed to your workout - vary between breathing comfortably and then just out of your comfort level to start building up your capacity from there....

Re: Runners, a breathing question

Mine is not slow but is steady, usually in and out of mouth. If I concentrate then I do in through nose but that is hard when I am running fast. Once I accelerate or get deep into a long run I breath faster.

Give it a week or two and see how you feel. If it doesnt get better I would see a dr. It could be asthma related. Good luck!
