Rosenblum denies testing waiver
Thoughts on Ian Rosenblum denying the waiver to eliminate the 3-8 assessment testing for this year?
I personally think this is a huge misstep as many children across the United States have not stepped into a school since last March. The inequity in education across the United States is undeniable, especially during the pandemic, but insisting children sit for a meaningless test while many are still not getting their basic educational needs met, is just ridiculous. The focus should be on getting the children back in school full time not testing them.

We can still opt out right? I would encourage everyone to opt out. Especially if your child hasn't been in in person school at all.
Ridiculous to be worrying about nonsense standardized tests at this point.

Yes we can still opt out. They said they will not penalize the states for results or low participation. So they might have well just have cancelled them. Just throw the poor kids and teachers a bone.

Every single parent should opt out as a sign of protest.

I was reading they might possibly go ahead with The Math, English, and Science Regents. I do not understand how that can possible happen?
How would they administer the test? You can't force students who are remote to enter the building to take the test, and you cannot have the kids take it online at home.

I really hope they cancel it. My son is in 7th but will take the Algebra I and Earth Science Regents this year and although I think he will do fine, he's really been at a disadvantage taking these 9th grade classes as a 7th grader hybrid. I don't want a not so great score going on his transcript even though no one really looks at those scores.

Like I said, for the earth Science Regents, they have to do a hand's on lab, which counts towards their score. If a kid is all remote, not sure what an alternative would be, or maybe that portion off?

Graduating students need to meet the ESSA which is the standard set by the Federal Government. To meet that, a student needs to take 1 math, 1 science and 1 English mastery test. NY does this through the regents exams.
Since the federal government did not issue the waiver, those tests for graduating seniors need to have been taken. All other regents, they are meeting in March to most likely cancel as the NYSED has control over that. It will mainly effect the 11th and 12 graders for regents, not the younger grades.

Is it really for the benefit of the school though? Presumably kids will do poorly this year and that won't reflect well on the school.
My DD is too little, but you can bet your buns she'd be taking the test if she were old enough. Anything that can shed light on how horribly hybrid and remote have worked the past year, I'm in. If a bunch of kids doing poorly on a test is what provides the hard data showing that kids need to be in school then it's well worth it to me.

The tests are designed to make trying to look up answers actually less productive. Looking up answers is a memorization thing, not a learning thing, so I don't remember what DS said was different, but they focused more on concepts, which is difficult to cheat on. You also have to have your camera on the entire time, so you can't have your older brother, who's a PhD in the subject take your test for you.

Yeah that makes sense.
I think they have the cheating prevention thing down to the same or lower level as in-person, but that's for upper HS and college level exams. I don't know how remote testing would work logistically for much younger students. I can foresee a lot more issues with young kids that might not be easy to overcome.
