There is basically no beach on the south shore, at either FI, RM, or JB. It's completely devastated.

I think there was some SERIOUS beach erosion. Water receded, but no sand left.

There are no more dunes to stop erosion. So this storm on Wednesday is going to be really bad for the south shore. How much more can these poor people take?

There are those machines........not sure if LI has them, but the VA/Carolinas do, I believe..........
they are these big machines that go out in the water, suck up sand, and shoot it back to the shore.
They were used in creating islands in Dubai, I think.

yes!!! Dubai is man made so they can fix beaches. It just takes time.

This is what they do to our beaches in FL, it's called dredging. It takes a loooong time, and it's not a guaranteed fix. Sandy actually wiped out our beaches in FL too

The Army Corp of Engineers has done this NUMEROUS times all along FINS and into Jones Beach.
I'm sure they'll be back and do it again, but it takes YEARS to do it.
I remember the beaches before hurricane Gloria, I'd say it's only been within the last 5-7 years that the beaches were really built up in any way, shape or form.
This is going to be a long time in the making.

it just breaks my heart. I hope they can fix it somewhat before the summer. I love the beach in the summer and it not being there is really sad.
Has the beach erosion ever been this bad? I feel like it has been this way for years and they keep trying to restore it. I don't remember much about Gloria but is that when substantial erosion began?

Is field 5 the one with the lighthouse and the long boarwalk path down to the water that you can bring the dogs to in the winter? I am a JB girl but, when I had a dog I used to bring her to that field all the time. (The nude beach area)
