Have not been there since I was a kid. What field is the shortest walk to the beach? Do they have a boardwalk?

Field 5 is the shortest walk to the beach. Because of erosion, if you go into the field 5 parking lot and go all the way to the left, it's the shortest walk in the entire park.
Coincidentally, the boardwalk to the Fire Island Lighthouse begins over there as well (you will see the entrance to it in the parking lot of field 5) and that is a beautiful walk. Beware of entering the beach from the boardwalk that way, though, since that's where the "nudies" (as my kids call them!!) tend to hang out.
